1371026 2014-03-26 03:40:00 too right you are wainuitech, right as usual Narrrrrrrr not always right, but being in business and sometimes dealing with charity software and other forms of special pricing, you have to make sure all the t's are crossed and i's dotted :)

MANY people forget about the odd bits and pieces, or dont know the full run down on whats required ( licencing etc). nothing worse than doing a price quote for someone and leaving out something that's gonna cost a lot more.

lack of software availability is a definite issue It's available, so no problems there, just cant walk in off the street and buy some things.

Like some of the MS Office charity pricing, talk about paperwork to set up a new customer, but its worth it in the end for the price you get it. :)

Linux were doing a version a while back but never really as good as the MS one, I did try it once but it was very unstable where as Windows Multiseat went in and worked fine first time ( same hardware) this was Multiseat 2011

Which one was that? I would be surprised if they didn't have something pretty decent by now

from what i understnad with linux you must edit many files by ahdn and configuration changes are not warmly received.

i saw a mouse only setup on multiseat on ubuntu on youtube recently, could be ok by now.

softxpand is very nice for 2-4 users. apart from random logoffs.

with softxpand you sit down at a station , press both crtl keys, the number of the workstation and both mouse buttons in a particular order.

i am curious as to how microsoft multipoint handles assignment of devices. if it handles usb headsets (is no sound easier). and if power can be shut down for individual unused monitors (softxpand cannot)

linux is always the ideal but a fully functional microsoft environment is a great thing to behold.

1371029 2014-03-26 04:42:00 upgrading 80 computers at a school for less than $15k is realistic. would only be 9K for the hardware, 6k for cables and fees seems reasonable.

how much would 80 computers usually cost a school?

as always i assume a school would be selling off their existing computers complete with monitors etc and getting new machines. the more sane approach would be to upgrade just the towers on a third of them every year or 2.

multiseat enhances this further. just get one new multiseat box every 6 months.

Cant remember exactly which one I tried, but there was One I looked at www.userful.com

Downloading the full version, seems its only free for 2 users "Your Free-2-User activation code will be emailed to you shortly." The other version they have you already have to have Ubuntu or Edubuntu installed already.

To obtain a commercial license for more than two stations per PC, please contact Userful. ( doesn't say how much) so I would suspect it depends on number of licences required.

is this just thin clients or does it also support multihead video cards with more usb ports than you can shake a stick at?

for many people the domain intergration multipoint server offers will be essential.

but this linux stuff, free is pretty sweet.

with free you can definitely upgrade 100 workstations for far less than 20k

Only one I've ever had and used is MPS.

To quote yourself: "a fully functional microsoft environment is a great thing to behold"

It was simple to setup and configure, and even simpler to use.

1371033 2014-03-26 07:35:00 how was the experience of assigning monitors, keyboards and mice? Mirddes (10)
1371034 2014-03-26 09:11:00 The setup was a piece of cake.

This is from memory when I did 2011 so it may be slightly off, but should be close enough.

One KB/Mouse and LCD connected, the OS installed as you would any other OS, once it was installed you log into the Admin account ( made during setup) from there you add the users.
Eg: user 1 Password- What ever you want
User 2 Password what ever you want.

This is so when a person logs in they have their own user account and password, this way it doesn't matter what "seat" they are sitting at its always their account they log into.

(could be a bit rusty here)
To setup the KB/Mouse LCD, plug in one to a USB Hub/connected to the PC, to activate it you got a message stating connect ( or something similar) press the key combo asked, this then connects the "seat", move onto the next "seat" Repeat.

If the computer is turned off they auto pick up again.

The Admin has complete control over who does what, can disconnect who they want or send a group message. The admin can log in from any seat using the administrator account and password to access the control panel or alter things ( see video below)

Their early Promo video www.youtube.com isn't quite as easy as its made out, but its still easy to setup. The hardest part is setting up the individual user accounts, (even thats easy). The biggest problem is the USB hubs, some cheap lower quality cant handle it.

Edited: there was a video showing the linux version from userful www.youtube.com -- haven't watched it all, but I do now have the ISO downloaded, looks like WT is going to "play" when I find time :D

May have to fire up 2012 MPS and have a play as well ;)

The problem with 'niche' distro's is that you get just what someone elses idea of a good setup is, that may not necessarily match the way you want to do it, and may be difficult to rearrange.

I really can't see any issues setting this up fairly easily on ANY distro.

You can quite happily run many Xservers, and you can line up which screens/keyboards/mice are attached to which with an xorg.conf file.

Sounds like a fun project - might have to have a scrounge around for some suitable hardware (video outs being the bottleneck :)).
