1370689 2014-03-20 22:57:00 When it was first connected did it pop up with a message asking to select a network either private or Public ?

Did you have to install drivers from Toshiba to get the Ethernet connection to work, or did W8.1 pick them up automatically.

Usually if its asking for a username and password then it cant pick up the info from the router, was there any sort of configuring been done in the network setting or are they set to obtain automatically ?

Is the Router actually giving the laptop a IP address when you run msconfig from a command prompt , or is it coming up with 169. xxx.xxx etc

This is of course different to browsing shared folders over the LAN and asking for a user name and password.

1370690 2014-03-21 01:39:00 I have Win8 and 8.1 on both AD and SmartNet networks in schools and business.

The only issue I have ever had is a file corruption issue on one of the AD sites that I believe is to do with the previous IT guy trying to encrypt the complete OS hard drive on the server.

For SmartNet no need for Pro version. Just turn off User Control or the config file will not save for all users (for Pro as well).

If it is a public school then all software can be downloaded from Volume Licencing.

Works fine if setup correctly.

I told it private, but it seemed to go public which took a bit troubleshooting to change to private - which allows homegroup.
8.1 installed drivers ok. Network settings are as first installed - obtain automatically.
msconfig gave me a local ip 192.168.1.68 with my win7 machine being 192.168.1.67.
Win7 can see the win8.1 machine but can't connect. Got me stumped.

GREAT. Questions:
Wired, wifi or mixed?
Sec, Int, or primary?
Did you get the update pack from the MOE or clean installs from downloaded isos?
With Smartnet and local files - is local server version important?

Makes me feel a bit more optimistic - if I could only get this damn laptop to work.

1370693 2014-03-21 06:44:00 Win7 can see the win8.1 machine but can't connect. Got me stumped.Thats the same for W7 settings. Make sure you are NOT in homegroup, if the laptop has joined one, leave it.

Make sure the workgroup is the same on the Laptop as the rest of the computers.( works better when they are)

Now to remove the user name password Prompt. Go to Network and sharing in the control panel, on the left open change advanced settings -

Look at the following settings highlighted, the Bottom one esp:

That pic is from a W7 PC, my windows 8 inside is errrrrrrrrrrr just a little broken at the moment, in the process of fixing it --- Someone fiddled and made a bobo :D :xmouth: just an annoying one, but I dont like it when its not working as it should.

Do you know how to share folders in W7 Fully ?

OK. Made sure no Homegroups are enabled. Both in the same Workgroup. Progress!! ? on the Win7 both machines appear under Network. But no access. Win8.1 Turned on Remote Desktop Connection, checked in Computer Management and made sure all services involving RDC are started. On Win7 Right click options of remote desktop connect and open in new window fail to connect.

Made another try at connecting to the Internet and got error 651 - brief search reveals this is common so might be getting somewhere - feels like lost in space though.

1370695 2014-03-23 20:51:00 And whats remote desktop for? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1370696 2014-03-23 20:56:00 Just FYI, Remote Desktop is the feature that allows one computer to take control of another (with authentication of course) - if you don't need that feature, turn it off. It's not related to simple networking. pcuser42 (130)
1370697 2014-03-23 21:28:00 Desperate times call for desperate measures. Simple networking isn't happening so I'm trying options. johnnymax (17033)
1370698 2014-03-23 22:47:00 on the Win7 both machines appear under Network. But no access Assume you have actually shared a folder fully or something on the W8.1 ? If nothing is shared you wont get any access (and an error) because theres nothing to gain entry to. wainuitech (129)
