| 1371379 | 2014-03-29 20:19:00 | So I like to do the daily Sudoku on Stuff and Herald websites, but today the puzzle seemed to be bogging down my computer badly. I normally run my computer in a low power state except when I'm gaming. A stinking Sudoku shouldn't need 3GHz of grunt, but I set the computer to full noise and resume the puzzle - still bogging down like crazy. So I start task manager. Flashplayer is using up to 60% of CPU cycles! I shrink my browser window so I can keep the puzzle and Task Manager both on screen at once to observe as I lurch through the puzzle - but suddenly Flash is only using 5% of resources, and the puzzles going fine! So it turns out that a stinking animated ad for Isaacs Cider is hogging all the resources. It's positioned to the right of the Sudoku, and by shrinking the browser window to the point where the ad is offscreen I've suddly got back all that stolen performance. So what was the animation that was so important it had to bring a gaming system to a crawl? Just a background image of rotating sun rays, and only occupying a few cm of screen. Conclusion: 1) Macs brewery can go to hell for foisting such a crap ad on me in the first place. 2) Flash just continues to get worse with every successive update. The sooner it's dead and buried the better. |
