1370679 2014-03-19 21:04:00 Found that - no real problems there that I can see although the option of picture passwords, esp on a NON-TOUCH screen laptop, is ridiculous.Picture passwords are fantastic on touch screens. Might even be a bit more fun for kids too ;) pcuser42 (130)
1370680 2014-03-19 21:26:00 Any experience with Virtual CDs on 8.1? If you mean can you run Windows 8.1 from a DVD, then NO, BUT with the enterprise edition (even the 90 Day Trial) technet.microsoft.com has the option to make whats called "Windows to go" on a USB drive, www.eightforums.com can boot windows 8 directly from the USB drive into the full working interface ( like a Live linux DVD) You can do a search on Google and it will bring up other articles.

Windows 8 /8.1 runs VM's very nicely, I use Oracle VM Virtual box on W8.1 to run various other OS's.

Windows 8.1 does have the ability to mount and run programs from ISO's and VHD's, but I think it depends on the program, some run fine others pop up with a message saying it cont be done with this program.

For the tile sizing etc, you right click a tile, down the bottom will be options.

The New leaked update adds a right click menu to the tile instead:

( as well as a more obvious power Button on the start screen - to name a few changes)

Some will still find that hard, its on the top right, not bottom left ( Being sarcastic LOL ) :p

1370681 2014-03-19 21:35:00 You may want to think about seriously locking down these laptops, so the kids only have very limited access to programs you want them to run.
Pass protect the bios.
Dont let them have admin rights on the laptops
Perhaps lockout the use of USB flash drives, so the kids & teachers dont bring in virus infected USB flash drives from home.
Win8 does have a very nice refresh(restore) utility thats bound to be very useful in a school environment .

1370683 2014-03-19 22:49:00 According to this guy you don't need the Enterprise version, to create a To Go disk (www.neowin.net)

Just a program called GImagex, a flash drive, A Win 8 disk or ISO. Mount it. Copy the install.wim file to a folder or desktop, and type in a few commands after.

Add to that several hours to get it working ;)

Tried it, took 93 minutes just to create a the USB drive, did the command prompts, went through fine, when trying to boot from it :sleep:sleep over an hour later still sitting on the windows icon with the circle going round and round and round :waughh:

BUT I found the problem, what the article doesn't say is that not all USB drives are compatible for running Windows to go 8.1.

I tried it on the exact same USB drive using the real feature in 8.1 and it showed the error USB drive not compatible with Windows to go. In the past I had used the exact same drive on a windows 8 and it worked fine.

1370685 2014-03-20 05:56:00 I also thought it was a cool idea but after a bit of reading it needed one of the approved drives which are fairly pricey except for the WD drive

If I had a selection of 16gb drives it would be worth while giving it a go to see if one worked

Would be an advantage for Comp tech's

1370686 2014-03-20 09:04:00 FYI - am just blowing the laptop away - reinstalling Win7. AND THEN I'll try a fresh install of Win8.1. Got fed up with trying to find my broadband at home so start again. First install was an 'update' and seems not the best way. johnnymax (17033)
1370687 2014-03-20 09:08:00 Finally got WTG going as per speedy link.

The problem WAS the USB drive, the fact that program doesn't check for being compatible is a huge FAIL.

I put a Laptop (2.5") 80GB drive into an external case, re-did it, this time it worked - install time on 1st USB drive- 93 Minutes - booting once commands run - failed, wouldn't work endless "setting up".

Install on external HDD - 12 minutes to install, ran commands, 5 minutes to setup and fully working. ( you need a product key during the setup, in my case I just used the default w8.1 - non activate Product keys)

1370688 2014-03-20 21:09:00 Plot thickens - or is it Windows that is thicker... Anyway. Clean installation of Win 8.1. At one point it identified it was connected, I'd left wire in to the broadband router. Trying to connect to internet it wants me to enter username and password for ISP - Every other computer in the house uses LAN connection and accepts that the router is connected. Any ideas how to set the laptop to be sensible?
