1352657 2013-09-04 02:21:00 A) it's our National Song which as a Kiwi I respect no mater what it reads.
B) OP is showing interest in our Culture, after your comments I'd be shocked if they wanted to come here after reading this.

Show some b***dy respect guys...

1352658 2013-09-04 02:25:00 Always hated the haka and the people preforming them.Grr @ you mate. It stirs me in the best way when performed before an All Blacks game. Greg (193)

From where I sit, most national anthems are blood thirsty dirges celebrating otherwise (and deservedly) forgotten heroes and battles …

La Marseillaise, the most bloodthirsty of the lot:

Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors,
Bear or hold back your blows!
Spare these sad victims,
Regretfully arming against us . (repeat)
But not these bloodthirsty despots,
But not these accomplices of Bouillé,
All of these animals who, without pity,
Tear their mother's breast to pieces!

Bouillé was a French General, sometimes viewed as leading his troops from behind .

From Italy:

Italian Brothers,
Italy has awakened,
She has wreathed her head
With the helmet of Scipio .
Where is Victory?
She bows her head to you,
You, whom God created
As the slave of Rome .
Let us band together,
We are ready to die,

Another General . This one is Scipio who vanquished Hannibal way back when .

More blood, this time from the USA:

Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Shades of Vietnam? And Korea? And … And …

Some kudos, to the Australians, our cuzzy bros across the ditch . Their anthem is without blood letting, but rightfully speaks to the future:

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair .
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair .

Hats off to the Poms with the simple “God Save the Queen” . (Still the #1 NZ anthem) . There’s no attempt to invoke threats, resurrect Boadicea, or celebrate recent military victories .

A timeless classic because the words evolved into popular usage over several hundred years . The tune is also a classic to which several hymns have been set .

So, all in all, our NZ #2 Anthem is not too bad . Here’s all the words for those (I’m one) who don’t know:

God of Nations! at Thy feet,
In the bonds of love we meet,
Hear our voices we entreat,
God defend our free land .
Guard Pacific's triple star
From the shafts of strife and war,
Make her praises heard afar,
God defend New Zealand .

Men of every creed and race,
Gather here before Thy face,
Asking Thee to bless this place,
God defend our free land
From dissension, envy, hate,
And corruption guard our State .
Make our country good and great,
God defend New Zealand .

Peace, not war, shall be our boast,
But, should foes assail our coast,
Make us then a mighty host,
God defend our free land
Lord of battles, in Thy might,
Put our enemies to flight,
Let our cause be just and right,
God defend New Zealand .

Let our love for thee increase,
May thy blessings never cease,
Give us plenty, give us peace,
God defend our free land .
From dishonour and from shame,
Guard our country's spotless name,
Crown her with immortal fame,
God defend New Zealand .

May our mountains ever be
Freedom's ramparts on the sea,
Make us faithful unto Thee,
God defend our free land .
Guide her in the nations' van,
Preaching love and truth to man,
Working out Thy glorious plan,
God defend New Zealand .

Still distancing ourselves from the northern hemisphere penchant (except for the UK) of invoking deities, glorifying past military heroes, and bloody battles .
But still suffering massive dirge-like music . That’s another problem with purpose designed anthems . Dreary, tuneless dirges . Or from the compose-an-anthem factory, lilting soaring music (Advance Australia Fair) demanding a range of several octaves that the majority of us just don’t have .

Resurrected, regurgitated, call you what you will it's also a thread that gets thrashed around once every year or so .

Someone earlier said they liked the Maori version because they didn't understand the words . :)

I've posted this two or three times in recent years, and I'll do so again .

Feet up (for those in Government sinecures), wide screen, and volume up . Here's my favourite:

1352660 2013-09-04 08:26:00 Not only that, our anthem is one of the most powerful as well as one of the cheapest laxatives around, and absolutely guaranteed to be non-habit-forming. R2x1 (4628)
1352661 2013-09-04 08:31:00 Not only that, but also, our anthem is one of the most powerful as well as one of the cheapest laxatives around, and absolutely guaranteed to be non-habit-forming.

1352662 2013-09-04 08:32:00 Ever been in a crowd of 70,000+ Chinese when the NZ national anthem was played?

I have, and it was one of the most powerful emotional highlights of my life :)

1352663 2013-09-04 08:44:00 I just saw this line in the last verse:

"Guide her in the nations' van"

The nation's van!

Note the use of the definite article. "The" indicates this nation only owns one van.

Not two or three vans. Not a Fleet of vans. Not a collection of Vans. Just one. The nation's van. But obviously it must be a very large van to contain the nation.

Does our van possess a current WOF, or if rented from Avis or Hertz or Rent a Dent, a COF?

Is it a Nissan, a Ford, a Mercedes, a Morris Minor? Why doesn't our anthem tell us?

What colour is our van?

These questions need to be answered. Immediately if not sooner. Our anthem doesn't tell us!

:annoyed:

1352664 2013-09-04 22:59:00 Lyrics aside, the US anthem's melody is almost painful to sing, with a range of one and a half octaves.

Unless you start very low, most singers sound like they are screeching.

1352665 2013-09-05 02:52:00 I find the anthem quite stirring, makes me feel proud to be a Caucasian New Zealander of British descent.

Right there with you mate. Attended the ANZAC dawn service here in Melbourne this year, and being with over 50,000 other people while our national anthem was sung was stirring to say the least.

1352666 2013-09-06 06:52:00 And what are you thoughts on the Haka??

I feel that the Haka should be performed whilst singing the Nation Anthem.

Should be noted that as soon as a Kiwi leaves our shores, he can't wait to do a Haka.

I see them doing at the American cup site.
