| 1371304 | 2014-03-26 00:01:00 | Hi Guys, I was considering Snap... more broadband and better copper phone rates vs Orcon. Then I visited their FB page which isn't a happy place. Maybe Orcon can hold on to me with phone over the blinking internet. Anyone using their voip in Wanganui ? how is it these days ? :) Thanks for any comments Pete |

We have 100Gb and free national calling for less than anyone else is offering. Telecom offer far less for the same money | gary67 (56) | ||

I've heard through the grapevine it's been mediocre lately though, they've not been able to keep up with growth. Their SIP was initially a white-labelled 2talk solution IIRC, which is cool coz arguably 2talk are the cheapest but still the best in the country. Can't fault that, and there's nothing wrong with calling over the internet :) Both their internet, SIP and support is better than Orcons though :D |

| 1371312 | 2014-03-27 02:13:00 | I work in VoIP as a day job. When it's finally up and running (Which 9/10x has issues when doing business stuff), it's usually "OK". If you're using their Genius router you can make that fall over. My parents in particular were causing it to die 5-6x a day before I got them off Orcon finally. Their corporate stuff isn't much better. Their internet, if you're on the flat-rate, during peak hours it just turns to absolute custard. They brag "We have people doing over 1TB on our unlimited DSL and we don't throttle them"... Freakin' idiots, how is that ever a good thing? Can you imagine the speeds of it? It's not Orcon throttling people, it's the congestion of the network that naturally affects the speeds of everybody. Suddenly where you should be getting 10mbps on ADSL, you're only getting 1mbps because of all the congestion. I know people who can't even watch a 480p YouTube video on Orcon during peak hours, it's so bad! |

Admittedly, this is on a 30/10 UFB connection but if congestion was such an issue, it would surely show on all connections. Perhaps you are comparing results of a few months ago? They have markedly improved their throughput over recent months. |
