| 1371291 | 2014-03-25 21:29:00 | Recently, I joined a group that had a website designed and hosted for them. As part of the deal the design company got a domain name and registered it. They have no idea who the domain name is registered with. The problem is what if the web design company goes out of business. What is the basic information the group need to ask from the web designer so that they are protected if the web design company fail. Thanks. |

Thanks. try doing a ping on the web site then use the returned ip to do a whois that may give you domain registration company. or you could try searching here http://www.domainz.net.nz/ but I would think you would be able to renew a domain name with domain name reg company as long as you could prove owner ship |

Even if they went bust they wouldn't just shut everything down immediately. Organised backups are probably the way to go so that if they do get into trouble, you can effortlessly move to someone else. What is the name of the website hosting company? |

I've done what you suggested and got the hosting company (Miki Pro). But they didn't design the system. What I need to know is who the domain name is registered with. What else do we need to know? |

What I need to know is who the domain name is registered with. What else do we need to know? The web hosting company doesn't normally design the site, they just host it. The web design company will normally have their logo and design name, contact details in the footer of the home page of your company website. |

| 1371296 | 2014-03-25 22:14:00 | You need to obtain the UDAI (for .nz names) - this will be available from them. | Greg (193) | ||
| 1371297 | 2014-03-25 22:15:00 | Performing a whois on the domain will provide registration info. The registrant details should be your group, or a representative of your group. | inphinity (7274) | ||
| 1371298 | 2014-03-25 23:02:00 | You need to get some control over you domain registration, sooner rather than later. bung the domain name in this search page to see info for the domain . :Registrar Name, contact info etc etc dnc.org.nz |

| 1371299 | 2014-03-26 00:59:00 | Recently, I joined a group that had a website designed and hosted for them . As part of the deal the design company got a domain name and registered it . They have no idea who the domain name is registered with . The problem is what if the web design company goes out of business . . WHOIS will tell you who the registrant for the domain is . Another clue is they are the one that send you the renewal notice (bill) each year . As for the website itself, it doesn't matter who wrote it - get a COPY of the code and keep it backed up yourself . Should you need to change hosting companies, you can then upload it to the new company . Note they are 2 different things - domain - website . Some designers will not let you keep the code - it all depends on what sort of contract you had with them . |
