275108 2004-09-24 05:55:00 After installing SP2, motherboard drives and changing some settings, Windows will not start on a new computer I have built for a customer.

P4 3Ghz, 1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, Foxconn motherboard.

Windows XP Pro setup went flawlessly, and the PC started fine, but when I:

- Installed motherboard drivers from Foxconn CD
- Installed SP2
- Set pagefile to none
- Changed computer name

And now the machine won't start. When trying to load it normally, after about 10 seconds the blue bar goes jerky, and then stops and hangs.

If I try Safe Mode, it freezes at System32\Drivers\Mup.sys

It cannot be Ctrl+Alt+Del'd, the Reset button must be pressed to make it come back to life?

What can I do? I want to give the PC to him tonight.

275109 2004-09-24 06:03:00 Possibly the wrong video or sound card drivers
Is the sound card integrated or a PCI plugin.
Try another video card if you have no luck with the sound card

275110 2004-09-24 06:05:00 Forgot to say this happened to me when I accidently installed wrong drivers for a sound card.
Also how long have you left it sitting at MUP.sys, as I found after about 30mins it would actually continue to boot

275111 2004-09-24 06:05:00 Sound and vid card are integrated, drivers are straight from the mobo CD. george12 (7)
275112 2004-09-24 06:05:00 Have you tried booting with the last known good configuration?

You should see this option after starting from a reset.

You could also try booting from the Windows CD and choose repair option, but Im not sure how this works after SP2 has been installed.

275113 2004-09-24 06:05:00 Oh... well, it would have been about 30 mins by now, but I'll keep it on. george12 (7)

Yes, exactly the same result as normal boot

> You could also try booting from the Windows CD and choose repair option

Trying it now

275115 2004-09-24 06:14:00 Can you access the recovery console, if so I can email you a procedure to restore a hidden backup of the windows files from the command prompt.
Takes a while but it does work

275116 2004-09-24 06:15:00 With the repair option it takes you to the Recovery Console command line, so unless you know what is causing the problem, ie deleting or replacing a bad file, it may not help.

You could try the Advanced Startup options using F8 key and try booting with VGA mode selected, that could eliminate or otherwise a video driver problem.

275117 2004-09-24 06:16:00 Yes I can get into Recovery console.
