| 275151 | 2004-09-24 08:52:00 | Here is what Juha sasy about this in todays Computerworld Fry up: - Death of UBS? There is good news for New Zealand broadband customers this week: Telecom will make flat-rate DSL plans with 256, 1Mbit/s and 2Mbit/s download speeds available in exactly a months time . Im grizzling about the low upstream speed 128-192kbit/s depending on the plan and the meagre 1-10GB allowance before the connection throttles down to 64kbit/s . Oh, and I dont think you can get static IP addresses either . But nevertheless, thats a good deal better than UBS, and for a similar price . The cheapest 256/128kbit/s plan is $29 . 95 if you put your calls through Telecom, and the 2M/192kbit/s plan is $59 . 95 a month . Add the usual $10 for the ISP, and youd have to wonder why anyone would bother with USB? Orcon for instance says itll charge $49 . 95 - $59 . 95 for its UBS plans, and the recently released CallPlus Jetbuster Express Unlimited Flat Rate plan is $59 . 95 . Note that there is no $100 churn fee slapped on customers switching providers, unlike UBS . Weve talked to ISPs about the new plans, and in brief, they say it means UBS has been a big waste of everyones time and money . Unfortunately, its impossible to disagree with that conclusion . - Faster flat-rate Telecom DSL plans launched ( . idg . co . nz/news . nsf/A0DFA2A549E823C0CC256D9600196ABD/7CB391F4784DAC5CCC256F190014B86D" target="_blank">www . idg . co . nz) - Commission monitoring broadband uptake ( . co . nz/news . nsf/UNID/EE88029892A0C775CC256F17001195BF" target="_blank">computerworld . co . nz) |

| 275152 | 2004-09-24 09:09:00 | Anyone read the specs for UBS? Says they are allowed to have a certain amount of packet loss for the connection. You really have to read the fine print which isn't publicly available. So could be 2mbit, 10Gb and up to 50% packet loss :O |

| 275153 | 2004-09-24 09:09:00 | Well correct me if I'm wrong but . . . I might be missing something here, it doesn't look like these new plans offer any sort of saving . If I've read the release right I'm going to be paying $20 more for the same amount of data at a higher speed . . . . how is that supposed to be better? Still looks like we're getting ripped off . Now if they had said the plans were uncapped or even had a 15GB or 20GB limit then I wouldn't have such a big problem forking out the extra $20 but even then I'd still have a think about whether it's worth it . If you ask me it's just looks like the New Zealand public is getting the same CORPORATE SHAFTING from TELESCUM . . . they have just figured out a way to make even more money off us!!!! If I'm being overly unreasonable, ungrateful or otherwise insensitive to TELESCUM's obvious scheme to milk us for every dime we've got . . . while keeping their services down to what can only be termed sub par (on world standards right now) let me know . . . . I really don't think these plans are any better than the ones they currently have . cheers chiefnz |

I agree. It's good for the small percentage of the population who are high on downloads, etc. But for most of us, I doubt we get past 2/3ish GB. No way I'm forking out $20 extra just to download faster, because we usually download 1.5-1.8Gb anyway! Its just another excuse to get people's money. |

The other day Thanks to VNC & with a mate over in the USA I download Apache/php (as he wanted me to help him set-up Apache/php on his win box) on his 1.2m connection & it took less then 5 mins to download, if I did the same download on my 256 K connection it would take about 10 mins aprox! Ok, I have to agree with you there about the data caps with this new plan & what we have are not that good but at lest we got 10GB! Even if NZ got 512/256 I would think any one would be happy ( I would be very happy if we even got 256/256! Not 256/128 :() Thats my 5 cents |

| 275157 | 2004-09-24 11:36:00 | Telescum are at it again. I won't be signing up to their measly plans, the swines. Their data caps are pathetic! TELECON R U LISTENING TO US? For God's sake stop ripping us off - maybe then we'll stop slagging you off. When you're monopoly falls apart, don't be surprised when customers desert you. I'm sticking with Orcon. |

| 275158 | 2004-09-24 13:47:00 | Bloddy telecom ehyy They are a bunch of money sucking pigs! And always trying to squash others who try to offer better deals to us . Even if they drop their prices by $20 for 250 000 cust signed up to Jetstream it a is mere $5million less for their profit annually . I am sure Theresa can give 2 . 5million from her fat pay and rest can come off the mammoth $800 mill profit they seem to be making every year . Arrhhh i am so sure no company in nz is more hated than Telecom and the greedy pigs heading the empire . |

| 275159 | 2004-09-24 20:16:00 | Telecom are a greedy fat cat corporation. The best way to shaft them is not to sign up for any of their fourth world offerings. They also have the cheek/gall to want to charge me $ 10 more per month as I am on Telstra Cklear for my phone calls ! For your info Telecom and to remind the rest of you. Telstra Clear has initaited EVERY single deal and offer that Telexcom sometimes match. $4 calls to Aussie etc etc etc Discount to schools Friends/regular caller type plans And there are and have been many others. Regards Digby |

Give her a break. She needs the money to help pay for a hairdresser. I'm sure she goes to the same one as Helen Clark. |
