275119 2004-09-24 06:40:00 OK, hopefully 45souths method will enable you to restore a copy of the registry.

Another option is to Enable Boot Logging and look for the file ntbtlog.txt in the root folder. If there is a faulty driver, the last entry may indentify it.

Presumably you'd have to use a boot disk with a test editor/reader on it.

275120 2004-09-24 06:43:00 I'm trying your method now, 45south.

Cheers

275121 2004-09-24 06:49:00 Hope your typing skills are better than mine.
As you probably already know, there can be no mistakes, or it's custard time
Good Luck

275122 2004-09-24 06:57:00 Damn, it didn't work. Still freezes at Mup.sys, although it is at a different place in the loading bar. Don't think that's significant though. Maybe I should just format.....

275123 2004-09-24 07:04:00 Aaagh, oh well, from the Recovery Console issue the commands fixboot and fixmbr as a last resort :)

I've never used these, there could possibly be a switch or something to specify the partition for fixboot

275124 2004-09-24 07:10:00 Darn, the only other suggestion I can make is using a boot CD such as Winternals 4.2, Ultimate boot CD, JTech's Boot CD etc
But you're probably right, a format or reinstallation would probably be quicker

275125 2004-09-24 07:12:00 Fixboot and Fixmbr are more for errors such as 'Cannot find NTLDR' or a non-bootable hard drive.

My hard drive boots fine, so I guess I will format.

Dammit, formatting after Windows has been installed for 4 hours...

275126 2004-09-24 07:34:00 I know exactly how you feel
Just did a quick google & brought up this
www.annoyances.org
Some problems were solved & most seem to be BIOS related
May be of some help
I'll certainly be copying them

275127 2004-09-24 10:26:00 You could check the ms site out http://www.microsoft.com

Type in 885626 up top in search. Sound like the prob you're having??

This article describes how to resolve an issue where your computer stops responding (hangs) when you restart to complete the installation of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. This issue occurs on a limited number of systems that use a version of basic input/output system (BIOS) that does not have production support for Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Celeron D processors based on the Prescott C-0 stepping.

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:

Your computer uses an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor that is based on Prescott C-0 processor stepping.
Your computer has a BIOS version that is out of specification.

Note A BIOS version that is out of specification does not provide support for the processor that is installed on your computer
