275679 2004-09-26 00:43:00 Hello,

Whenever I turn the server on, an RPC error window comes up and tells me it's shutting the server down. I stop it with the shutdown -a command, but then all the host services error and Windows generally starts complaining about something.

I have installed both Data Centre 2003 and Standard 2003 with the same effect. Both on fresh installs.

I took the hard drives out and scanned them in another machine for viruses with updated definitions, because the server also gives errors about how the installer service is unavailable. I am now also scanning it across the network - but in none of these scans have any viruses shown themselves...

I can't use Windows update, it doesn't work for some reason...

I think it's a virus - and unless all my install disks are virused then it must be on the machine.

Infact, I scanned the install disks and got nothing!

So does anyone have any suggestions? How do I stop this from happening? How do I fix it?

What's the actual cause?

Blaster?

Have you install a firewall & see if that helps?

275681 2004-09-26 01:01:00 Was it updated before u got on the net? If it has access to the net.

Has it got a firewall on it? Or was a firewall enabled? I take it one wasn't
since it might be blaster, or sasser, that hit it. Have you tried the Sasser, or Blaster removal tool? To see if they'll detect/remove it??

275682 2004-09-26 01:02:00 I thought it may be blaster, sasser, or another variant on those - but no antivirus picks them up...

Furthermore, I can't install anything :@

275683 2004-09-26 01:02:00 Also have you tried unplugging the computer which has 2003 server from the network/internet? stu120404 (268)

275685 2004-09-26 01:06:00 Hmm sounds like whatever it is, it may have disabled admin rights.

You could try the trend micro site and do a scan if it is online

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ With a firewall on if it has one.

... I just realised that I can't copy or paste... or open any network properties, or management console properties.. (i.e. event viewer...)

275687 2004-09-26 01:21:00 Neither blaster nor sasser came up. I also can't click and drag anything... or delete anything...

??!?!!?!?!

275688 2004-09-26 01:24:00 Does it bring up any errors when u try and delete?

Like you dont have admin rights or something??

It DOES sound like something has disabled something / which affects the admin login / rights
