275645 2004-09-26 00:45:00 Unlikely to notice any transfer speed differences.

USB modems don't tend to be as reliable as ethernet modems, they also rely on your processor to process the data which can put load on under-powered PC's.

Ethernet is definitely the way to go.

275646 2004-09-26 04:03:00 The USB is probably cheaper to make. :D It is also "easier to understand" for the non technical user: any USB cable which fits will work -- apart from the 1.1 and 2.0 problem which is going to bite some people (but a lightly loaded USB hub might handle broadband even if it has been slowed to USB 1.1 because it has the wrong cable).

It adds a protocol in the chain ... the CPU has to handle a USB connection and translate its traffic into/from TCP/IP. But even so, you shouldn't see any difference in speed. I wouldn't want to get into an argument about reliability ... I feel that USB will improve as manufacturers actually read the standards and comply with them. :_| By the time it's obsolete, it will be perfect. ]:)

275647 2004-09-26 13:34:00 USB Modems can be a pain. They have a driver & quite often don't work.
The Router once it is set up, is automatic and can handle several computers at the same time.
I use a Dick Smith XH1149 4 port Router connected to the ethernet adaptor & have never had any trouble with it.

275649 2004-09-27 08:40:00 The XH1149 Router also handles both USB and Ethernet. It needs a driver installed for the USB bit none for the Ethernet.
If you havn't got an Ethernet adaptor on your computer you can use the USB connection, but Ethernet cards are only about $14 at Dick Smiths.
