2004-09-25 01:54:00 | Hello, Im james and my pc has a few issues, ill describe them below, 1st here are the specs: AMD 2500+ Barton 512mb dd33 ram 40gb harddrive 7200rpm asus nvidia gf 5200 128mb dx9 300W max hyena power supply Computer Problems System Boot Failure, sometimes happens, computer doesn't beep when turned on and there is no display, or only a frozen display screen. Once it beeped 3 times when i turned it on for a day, fixes itself sometimes, works for a few days, then the problem comes back. Also, sometimes when it comes right, the bios is displayed and it says the cpu was set to an incorrect value, but i have never adjusted or overclocked it. Whenever i turn on the computer, the rear fan below the power supply makes a grinding noise for about 3 minutes, as if it's not lubricated or something. Computer hangs for about 30 seconds on startup between initiating the bios and loading windows. Sometimes, but rarely. An error comes up when loading windows saying there was a hardware fault, it gives me an option to load a previous configuration. Graphics display problem - As seen on other page, display comes corrup when in games. Usually colours are all red, or just messed up. Most probably a hardware problem as I have tried many software things, (different drivers etc). Also once, the graphics display was weird even out of games, even in safe mode! Weird Loading corruption - Sometimes games or programs crash when loading. Especially Doom3 (Doesn't start properly, have to restart and try again) I double click its exe, and it comes up with the loading screen and says 'initialising user interface', but nothing happens I press Ctrl + Alt + Del and it says Doom3.exe is not responding, so i either end the program, or wait and then it comes up with that error displayed on the other page (apparently related to memory corruption) If i try to start Doom3.exe again, it displays a blank screen, but when i press Ctrl + Alt + Del it says Doom3.exe is running, i can also hear the intro movie playing. Just cannot see anything. If i restart sometimes it works, (says 'loading game' instead of 'initialising user interface' and works) but then sometimes it freezes when loading or crashes to desktop. Speakers crackle and die out (either the left or right) have to turn them on and off to get them working, forced 2 use headphones because of it! Does anybody know what might be wrong with my pc and what i should get fixed? if so plz reply and if u know any good pc stores around northshore, tell me. thanks in advance, james Right now im thinking its: Possible reasons Overheated GPU or system Bad RAM memory Bad graphics chip, or just overheated Bad power supply (300W max) Corrupt BIOS or motherboard CMOS memory / battery?? (not sure there) Im planning an upgrade, will this fix the problem? Upgrade I am planning to upgrade these following things: New power supply (450 - 500W with duel quiet fans) New graphics card (Radeon 9600XT 256mb - 9800 Pro 256mb) New cpu fan (making overclocking an option for later performance gain) Extra graphics card fan (making overclocking an option for later performance gain) Replacement rear fan Extra 512mb DDR 333 - 400 (currently have 512mb DDR333) Hopefully this will fix most of the problems. If not, needs fixing

2004-09-25 02:02:00 | James here, just remembered to say im on Windows XP Pro SP1 Things ive done to prevent problems: Taken off casing to help cool pc down. gotten rid of all the dust in there. reinstalled windows several times in the past (no differnce) changed drivers (no diffence) im sure its a hardware fault, maybe to do with the motherboard my warranty at E-one computers has expired so i need someone close and affordable to fix it. but 1st i just wanted to know what you guys think is wrong and what i should do about it

2004-09-25 02:05:00 | Lol!! yes i will upgrade the power supply to 450W but are you sure thats the problem? i find that easy to belive, i dont run many peripherals like scanner, camera, printer, lots of lights or fans, but the reason it doesn't start up properly and the monitor cuts out maybe to a lack of power feeding it? thanks

2004-09-25 02:10:00 | How could i possibly be sure? But reading your post it certainly makes the psu an item to be lookad at,but overal its a matter of elimination,it could be a combination of defective components in your comp. But i would be bolting a new psu into her immediatly.and a new motherboard battery,Then if the problems still persist then different RAM(ram can be tested with memtest, but it takes a while and can from time to time give the all clear to dodgy ram...) After that....well.....you have to delve deeper,

2004-09-25 02:16:00 | im not sure what psu means, although ive seen it before (power supply ugly! - no) thanks for the motherboard battery tip, also i can't use memtest, my floppy drive wont work for some reason either. so i can't make a boot disk for it! :( when i try to access the floppy drive it says its not formatted blah balh its off topic so dnt worry bout that, i think i just need to get a new 1 and format it with XP (i had 9x before) Thanks so much for the advice, ill run over my 'psu' when i get a new1

2004-09-25 02:22:00 | PSU=Power supply unit. Memtest can be burned to cd,far better then using a floppy.
