275482 2004-09-26 00:53:00 wow thanks, ill open her up and look for it.
im a little confused as to why psu's are so cheap

$80 for a duel silent fan 500W AMD/P4 power supply
to me thats quiet cheap because in a pcpowerplay magazine i got
it had 550W for $220.. meh it was an aussie mag too so thats a big price diffence for 50 extra wats

I suppose i can replace the cmos battery myself also

You should go to E-One, they have an obligation to deliver a reliable computer. You can't expect them to fix problems you may have introduced such as software conflicts, but anything to do with the computer and its basic "suitability for purpose" is their problem for at least 24 months, regardless of what the warranty says.

If it was customised to your requirements then they have an even greater obligation to fix it as they knew what you wanted to use it for and should have advised/warned you if the specs you chose were inadequate.

Don't expect them to welcome you with open arms though James. You might have to fight for your rights as most computer companies think that it's all over when it leaves their door, let alone after 12 months. I suggest you get your Dad to handle negotiations. Remeber, further advice is available here, or just search the Forum archives on "Consumer Guarantees Act" and even "Warranty" should bring up some answers.

The fan problem should be fixed by them, and if the PSU is inadequate, they should replace the whole unit with a better specced supply. metla is right when he says to start with the Hyena and it sounds like they built down to your price, not up to your spec.

You shouldn't need a new battery after just one year, they normally last anything from 3 to 5 years+.

275485 2004-09-26 01:41:00 Personally i would just buy a new PSU and get it going again, rather then jack around getting it serviced. metla (154)
275486 2004-09-26 01:55:00 yea ur rite, i think ill just find a good shop, buy new psu, get new cmos battery (apparently why the cpu settings in cmos changed themselves - failing to start up pc properly)

get a new graphics card
and if that doesn't work blah

275487 2004-09-26 06:45:00 That is the best approach if money is no object James, but you could be giving away 3-4 hundred dollars by not asking e-one to fix it first .

At the very least you should get a suitably rated power supply out of them, but then you know more than we do about what's gone on in your PC since you bought it . If they are going to argue about anything you have done it might be the easier course .

BTW, you would normally see real time clock problems from a failing CMOS battery long before the cpu settings got lost, but your mileage may vary .

Cheers

Task TK-942TX-JB 420Watt P4/AMD Dual Fan/Silent Power Supply - $59.00

THERMALTAKE EXTREME 3-IN-1 CPU COOLER - $59.00

THERMALTAKE GIANT III HEATSINK COOLER FOR VIDEO CARDS - $69.00

512MB DDR400 (pc-3200)/Rambo/Elixir DDR RAM - $123.00

the power supply doesn't cost too much there, how could it be 2-3 hundred dollars? i dont mind paying for the power supply as Eone is in south auckland and it wouldn't be worth going there unless i saved at least $100

i don't know where you get your prices from but a quick search showed them to be $77-$100. i'm not sure there much better than the hyena. most decent psu's are $150-$300 range

275490 2004-09-26 11:24:00 Ok well these are the avaliable psu's from eone, i just used it as an example:

Hyena 300watt ATX P4 Power Supply - $30.00

Hyena 500watt ATX P4 Power Supply (Ball Bearing/Aluminum Case) - $89.00

AcBel 400Watt Intelligent Power Supply, with LED FAN & 18dB Super Low Noise. & PFC - $98.00

Task TK-952TX-DF 520Watt P4/AMD Dual Fan/Silent Power Supply (Metallic Blue) - $73.00

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems most hyena psu's are this cheap, i looked at thermaltake psu's they are slightly more expensive.

www.qmb.co.nz

the cheapest is:
Thermaltake TT420AD 420W (W0009) Dual Fan P4 / AMD ATX Power Supply, Retail Package $89.00

the rest are between $140 - $180 and look like they come with extras
