I guess a long line star point could cause problems if unterminated, but I would have put money on daisy-chaining being worse. Maybe the velocity factor of Cat5 wiring is the problem. It is .74 which is midway between an average quality general purpose coax (.66) and a top quality low-loss (.88)

I wonder if the current crop of communications hubs favoured by electricians are Telecom approved? It bears thinking about.

Telecom do favour star wiring. Take a look at point 2 here. (www.telepermit.co.nz) It looks like it might be their response to the star termination hubs I referred to earlier.
