275830 2004-09-27 02:51:00 Are the system requirments of Half Life Two equal or higher then those of Doom III ApeNz (4220)
275831 2004-09-27 03:00:00 Both games will require the best hardware your prepared to purchase.

If that makes any sence.

Both games use completely new game engines, and both are completly different. DOOM3 uses openGL where as HLF2 uses DX9.0. But yes in a nutshell HLF2 is as demanding as DOOM3

My bet is they appear for around $400 to $450.

275834 2004-09-27 03:09:00 On the other hand Doom3 likes to use a good Gb+ of RAM, so you might benefit from a RAM upgrade and a video card upgrade. 512mb RAM doesn't go far in Doom 3, you get a bit of stuttering at the beginning of levels because it's using the swap file, but it generally sorts itself out. alphazulusixeightniner (185)
275835 2004-09-27 03:17:00 The technology just keeps changing - can't keep up with it ApeNz (4220)

If you had read the thread carefully you would have seen that Apenz said he cant afford both ram and a video card upgrade.

275837 2004-09-27 04:17:00 what pete said ApeNz (4220)
275838 2004-09-27 04:37:00 Apenz if i was you i'd grab another 512mb of RAM, preferably the same brand and speed etc. This will enable dual channel and along with the benefit of extra ram you'll get the small benefit of dual channel.

Then wait another 3 months and save your pennies and wait for the video card market to settle. Then buy whatever is the new mid range card, probably the X700 or 6600. These will have preformance similar to the 9800 and should be good bang for your buck.

By this time we should see games based on the Doom3 and HLF2 engines, making a high end system more of a necesity. A X700 or 6600 should offer resonable preformance without breaking the bank. This should also mean that you wont have to upgrade anytime soon as the next "big" game engine should be a long way off.
