275734 2004-09-26 04:29:00 so i assume the cable connection is connected to the wireless router. therefore if the laptop is not running the win98 pc will still be able to access the net through the router.

if the pc orginally came with 95 then a usb ethernet or usb wireless is not a good idea. it would be cheaper, easier, faster and less problematic to pop open the case and fit a pci or isa network card or wireless card.

275735 2004-09-26 04:36:00 Yes to the first part of that (all this is academic so far but that is what I intended).
How will I know which of the two I need(pci or isa)?
And thanks,
Rob

275736 2004-09-26 04:40:00 I am looking at a 10/100Mbps PCI Network Adapter in the jaycar catalogue $17.95. Is that the sort of thing I should get? theother1 (3573)
275737 2004-09-26 04:43:00 open the case. there will be a row of white slots (you may havea modem or video card in some). those are pci, if there is any left you can use a pci lan card. if not there may be some longer black slots (isa) next to the white pci slots. if the isa are empty you can use an isa lan card. a couple of catches, try not to use the first pci slot if you have an agp (brown slot) card. often you can't use the last pci slot if you are useing the isa slots. if in doubt simply get the model number of the motherboard (or pc) and someone can have a look. tweak'e (174)
275738 2004-09-26 04:56:00 I knew someone would have me getting the cover of the thing. There are 2 PCI and 2 ISA slots available out of 4 of each, the middle 2 of each are in use. I can't ID the Motherboard due to cables (and dust) and I don't want to go poking around in there with out an A/S strap. What now? theother1 (3573)
275739 2004-09-26 05:05:00 pci lan card will be fine. don't put it in the pci slot thats next to the isa slots, use the other spare pci slot. that jaycar card should be ok. tweak'e (174)
275740 2004-09-26 05:08:00 Molto Gracias, Tweak'e,
I will pick one up tomorrow and give it a whirl. The boss will be impressed when I break her computer.
Again many thanks, Is there anything else I should know?
Rob

275742 2004-09-26 05:19:00 Just a couple or three more things. What are UTP networks and what is an RJ45 connecter? and is this the card for my requirements?
10/100Mbps PCI Network Adapter. This 32 bit bus mastering card is auto configured and connects to UTP networks via an RJ$% connector. The card auto senses network speed and supprts early receive and transmit interupts(?) Drivers are included Blahblahblah
