276110 2004-09-27 10:03:00 Dell advertise a dvd writer / player. The zone is locked atfter 5 changes of different zones. Is this normal. Do other computers do the same. also what happens if it locks onto the wrong zone a.a.harray (6204)
276111 2004-09-27 10:06:00 Yup thats normal for XP. If its locked on say Zone 1's after 5 changes, then u can ONLY play Zone 1 DVD's, on the internal DVD player. Unless u use a DVD player that bypasses this. Or u use a flash for the DVD player, which makes it region free. Spacemannz (808)

Would you be so kind as to elaborate a little for us on this?

276113 2004-09-27 10:17:00 To 'flash' a drive means to apply a firmware patch.
You can find one specific for your drive on the net.
Apparently things can go horribly wrong should you use the wrong patch - so make sure you find the right one.
Sometimes you don't need to flash your drive. I have some software for my Dell laptop DVD drive (which is an LG model) that simply resets the region changes left back to 5 whenever I want.

276114 2004-09-27 10:19:00 You can also get free software that lets you play any region DVD too. See that website. barmypom (6048)

276116 2004-09-27 11:39:00 You can use Players that bypass it too....

Does anybody have a Win32 PC handy that they can try VLC (videolan.org) on with a DVD that's not the current region of their DVD Drive?

276118 2004-09-27 12:34:00 If its Region-Free then its good for Windows users who dont want to fork out for Dvdidle.com's DVD Region-Free, and I can recommend it when asked.

Ive used VLC in Linux no worries like that, just wondering if its same in Doze.
