| 275820 | 2004-09-26 10:40:00 | Hi Im about to upgrade my AMD XP 2800 , ATI 9200 graphics from 512 megs to 768 megs - i have heard people say that unless your computer needs the extra ram their is a little preformance boast - what can i expect from 256 megs more ram |

You are unlikely to notice any real performance boost in everyday apps but you will if you are using mem intensive apps such as photoshop, 3d rendering programs such as max and lightwave and of course gaming. A decent graphics card might be a better upgrade. |

At the very least consider a FX5900 or 9800PRO, if you can scrap together some more cash a 6800GT would be a very good purchase. The 6800GT would last alot longer but also costs alot more. What motherboard do you have? It might be a good idea to increase the RAM to 1gb, if you have a nForce2 motherboard this would then enable dual channel memory and offer a small preformance gain. If your going to upgrade the ram dont bother with 256 make the jump to 512mb, but if thats all the budget will allow then so be it. DOOM3 really likes 1gb of RAM, and i suspect HLF2 will be the same. |

| 275827 | 2004-09-27 02:31:00 | yeah i got a n force 2 mobo - what is so good about duel channel. 1 gig of ram does sound nice but my graphics card does need a upgrade - what you think of the Radeon 9600 its better then what i got - Which runs Doom III quite well i might well ( I think thats my CPU ) | ApeNz (4220) | ||
| 275828 | 2004-09-27 02:43:00 | which will you consider better 256 more ram or a 9600 graphics ( i think thats all i can afford at the momment ) | ApeNz (4220) | ||
| 275829 | 2004-09-27 02:47:00 | I'd get the 9600 over 256mb RAM, if you think a 9200 runs DOOM3 well then you'll think your in heaven when you play it on a 9600. Dont expect to get more than a few months from a 9600, they are already considered entry level in terms of gaming. Your better off saving your money up for a lil longer and buying better video card. By then the X700XT and 6600GT should be avaliable, both will offer 9800PRO preformance at around $300ish. Personally i think upgrading from a 9200 to 9600 is a waste of money. | Pete O'Neil (250) | ||
