275712 2004-09-26 02:15:00 Only if on the first defrag there were x many fragments remaining, and after 2-3-4 respectivly there were less.

This can happen, but normaly indicates that there are large files and not enough free space to manipulate them in.

275713 2004-09-26 13:37:00 Tests have shown that fragged drives have very little effect on performance.
I have never bothered to defragg my drive and it works just fine.

275715 2004-09-27 08:35:00 PC World Magazine.
80 gig.
I have just checked it, only one partition needs defrag, this is because it is for backups and is changed frequently.
What you have to ballance is the extra wear, time & hassle of defragging and leaving it alone.
If the drive is compressed it does not frag.

So you are saying your entire operating system and all its components are compressed. can not frag. and will never need to be defragged?

Which edition of PC world? which page?

Do you have a eighty gig drive? or did the article refer to one.

How is it partitioned? or is it all compressed and not partitioned at all?

I can claim that..... With Honesty too... And I can also claim that my File-system is unbreakable, even in the even of power-loss/failure etc!

Yours will be far from "stock", FAT, or ugly NTFS, Which is where the origonal poster appears to be.

The last time you spoke about it I Vaguley recollect Reisers or some such being mentioned. Which you will have tuned to your likeing.

275720 2004-09-27 12:38:00 Correct Murray ;-)

An "Atomic" File-system... All write operations are either completed or not done at all!
Ive not defragged my personal PC/Laptop in over a year... Then again Ive formatted a fair few times trying different distro's and breaking things.

Apparently even WinFS will still need Defragging - What a hassle!
