276475 2004-09-28 11:19:00 [From Spam(probably inspired by a comedy routine on the British television series Monty Python's Flying Circus, in which the word is repeated incessantly).] zqwerty (97)
276476 2004-09-28 11:21:00 The word was coined as the winning entry in a 1937 competition
to choose a name for Hormel Foods Corporation's "spiced meat"
(now officially known as "SPAM luncheon meat"). Correspondant
Bob White claims the modern use of the term predates Monty
Python by at least ten years. He cites an editor for the
Dallas Times Herald describing Public Relations as "throwing a
can of spam into an electric fan just to see if any of it
would stick to the unwary passersby."

("A determined butcher with a big enough mincer can put almost anything into a sausage." I suppose the same applies to Spam.)

276480 2004-09-28 21:51:00 SPAM = Specially Prepared (or Pressed) American Meat.
Usually processed bits of animals pressed into a can.
NB : in the US, "meat" is not "beef" and when presented with the choice, go for the beef.

276481 2004-09-29 03:38:00 It's what the Americans sent us in food parcels during the war, along with peanut butter, dried egg and other goodies :). The tins had an American flag or red white and blue stripes on them from memory. Terry Porritt (14)
276482 2004-09-29 03:43:00 Didn't the yanks kill a handfull of Afganies recently when dropping food parcels?, and i do remember reports that the parcells were painted quite similar to shells they were bombarding the country with, some hungry sods were blown to pieces digging up what they thought to be a can of spam.... metla (154)
