276162 2004-09-29 01:57:00 On this topic, does anyone know if there is a motherboard that has built in functionally of booting via either Firewire or USB2?

My brother in law has a Mac Powerbook (an older g3) which he can boot via Firewire. It seems like a great feature that is lacking from Windows PCs...

276163 2004-09-29 04:41:00 It looks as if you will need to have a BIOS which can boot from a USB device, for any "simple" approach to this.

Without that, the boot loader will have to run under an OS which has loaded the code necessary to recognise and access the USB storage device. Only then can it boot from it. Something like LOADLIN.EXE (which runs under DOS) would be nice. Except that DOS doesn't talk USB.:D

This is why it's called "bootstrap" loading. Gravity wins everytime if you try to lift yourself by your own boot "straps" (laces? -- shows how old the analogy is). You need somewhere to stand, and something to brace your lever against and you can move the world.

276164 2004-09-29 05:22:00 DOS can talk USB - if you grab the drivers off the USB Ghost Disk. :D wintertide (1306)
276165 2004-09-29 10:51:00 Wintertide,

Which one 03/04/05 ?

02 does not have them.

276166 2004-09-29 10:55:00 Ghost 2003... just make a USB boot disk and rip the drivers with the appropriate entries in config.sys and autoexec.bat out.

Works like a dream with my USB key on old PCs at work that don't support boot from USB!
