277067 2004-09-30 05:58:00 My advice for Taipei (or any wher in Asia AND parts of Australia (Asian markets there) :P) is stay well aware from markets. In Taiwan, I'm well aware of an operation aimed at minimising risks for travellers in markets. Go to some big department shops, they don't dare to do such a thing. And bargin too :D There's always room for a cheaper deal, as well as cheap add-ons, like $15 ASUS wireless network card or extra ram, etc. They tend to sell things at cost price when it is an add-on with systems/laptops.

As tempting as it may be to buy from the 'Night Markets' many things are somewhat dodgy, e.g. Nike shirts saying, "Just did it" :D [BTW, I saw that in Sydney too]

277069 2004-09-30 06:46:00 Hey, if you want to increase your chances at customs. Send the box and manual etc.. back in the mail..... or get someone else to carry them so to spread out at customs... so you look like a normal guy carrying a laptop on holiday .. can't say too much on your comp parts thou .. nomad (3693)

I would agree. Make sure the laptop has its own bag, with a dirty mouse from home or something, hehe. Copy some OLD documents into the hard drives. But really, you probably will have to pay tax, it goes towards helping the country as a whole too ;-) They can go through your dates anyway, no point hiding. Just do it the right way and stay out of trouble

277071 2004-09-30 07:25:00 why not just say you bought the laptop in new zealand, took it out of the country, and are bringing it back in on return. Will they not accept that?
That's what I would do, as well as perhaps making sure you had an NZ plug to make it at least look as though it was purchased here (may look a bit obvious if it still had the overseas plug attached).
Just a thought.

277072 2004-09-30 08:41:00 they would never ask you to turn it on unless they really suspect something of you .... yeah the nz plug sounds good so they know u have been to nz before .... so it used. nomad (3693)
277073 2004-09-30 09:38:00 Thanks guys, but somehow that doesn't sound too legal. I'll see how I go - If I do decide to get one, I'll work out to see if it is cheaper bringing it back, in the event that I do have to pay GST etc. somebody (208)
277074 2004-09-30 09:58:00 Hundreds of people come in and out of the country with laptops every day. I really don't think customs would be particularly interested in it, as long as you take it as handluggage.
Maybe others have a different opinion through experience??

However, if you've got a suitcase full of individual components that add up to alot of money, then maybe that would be a problem.

Let us know how you go.

277075 2004-10-01 05:53:00 I think you are paranoid. Pple use cellphones, laptops, walkmans all the time. Its natural for pple to take these on the planes.

You don't really need to take along the NZ AC plug converter. They would never ask you to piece together all your wires and accessories and see if it matches.....

Just dump the box, send the manual etc back home. Thats all there is to it. All the times I have been overseas since 1997 I have never asked for a search both arriving overseas and returning back to NZL. Many times I take care and tell them I have been to national parks so are you gonna search me? I used the red light exit that I had something to declare, all the times they asked me, I said I don't have other footwears, they checked my soles of my current shoes and let me go without a search .... In the past I have been to the dept of customs and get a clearance letter which they check your goods and the serial #, since they never searched me I never had to use that form.

Can pple tell whether its a new laptop or a used one? I don't trash my laptop like some pple ... They would never ask you to turn it on .. look at the systems properties etc.. most of them don't know where to start unless they take you to a private room, that is if you are in real possible trouble....

Just stop worrying. But yeah if you have merchandise couple of raw comp parts then maybe. If you have the original packagaing then maybe ... looks like you're going to sell it?

277076 2004-10-01 08:55:00 Thanks Nomad,

I will probably be only buying a couple of items, all of which will be relatively low-value. I won't be buying 20 top-end video cards etc. or anything like that so I hopefully won't draw attention to myself.

Thanks for the advice. It's been a while since I've travelled overseas, and all of the times I have gone through the Red-lane because I have had food items to declare. Never had a problem so hopefully won't have any this time.
