277051 2004-09-30 03:42:00 Your better off getting him a cheapie I think, AMD 2400+ ish or Celeron 2.4Ghz (no more debates please!) should be fine.

Cost should be just over $500 i would think...

277052 2004-09-30 03:54:00 You'd be lucky to get a Athlon 2400+ now they've been replaced with the Sempron. Which preforms about the same as an equivilant celeron, thus elimiating any debate as to which is better :) Pete O'Neil (250)
277053 2004-09-30 04:10:00 What does he use it for? Games - internet - Email etc?

Depending of course whether its a D stepping or a stock celeron.
:-)
not debating though, all cpus mentioned are better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

277055 2004-09-30 04:28:00 built a pc yesterday for someone......celeron 2.4Ghz, 256 DDR, on board sound/vid/network/usb, new case, new modem, 40Gb Hdd parts cost about ummmmm.....approx $500, (retail) . you could add say $100 for a *reasonable* vid card and say another $80 to double the ram you could also add $150 and install a P4 2.8ghz instead.........if the old boy just wants to surf the web and email and not too much else I'd go for the celeron or similar amd cpu and a 64Mb vid card most likely or possibly even 32Mb vid onboard...... drcspy (146)
277056 2004-09-30 04:36:00 its for his emails and his buisness but also for games(Black and White 2) Codex (3761)
