277468 2004-10-02 02:31:00 hi all, just logged on this morning to find that my admin account has been relegated to "guest".

I am the only user of the machine, do not get into music sharing or online gaming.

I am stuck, cannot restore or do any type of admin tasks.

In process of runnin a/v, spybot etc....and googling my heart out.

Any clues to what has happened here????

cheers

277469 2004-10-02 03:22:00 Have you tried starting in safe mode and seeing what happens? andy (473)
277470 2004-10-02 03:52:00 You could try log off from the start button and see if you can re-log on as administrator. Terry Porritt (14)
277471 2004-10-02 04:15:00 tried safemode...no joy
the problem seems to be that my accounts have somehow changed from administrator ones to guest ones.

how about trying to hack a new password or something???

277472 2004-10-02 04:53:00 Why dont you just login as Administrator and change the accounts back? Pete O'Neil (250)
277473 2004-10-02 05:09:00 Pete,

When I have tried to do that XP home will not recognise the password.
I reinstalled a few weeks ago, updates, security proggies all done.
Yesterday I changed (in msconfig) a couple of things from start up.
When I logged in this avvo, the system config. utility box popped up and said rah, rah, rah....when i clicked ok, it said access denied because i did not have admin rights..... Then when i checked my user account settings, its a guest account now, not admin like it should.
So then i tried logging onto account "Administrator" with my password and windoze could not "verify".
And thats where i am at present....
Can i try to reset the password on account "Administrator" ?? is there third party software I can use....

277474 2004-10-02 05:11:00 What are you doing loggin in as Admin? By default windows sets up a seperate account that has admin privalages Pete O'Neil (250)
277475 2004-10-02 05:31:00 did you actually create a password for Administrator when you reinstalled.
try logging in as Admin with no password.
if successful, then change your own a/c
from memory you don't actually get asked to create an adminstrator password on the home edition setup (could be wrong tho')

277476 2004-10-02 05:32:00 you may have to boot to safe mode in home to see the "real" admin a/c on the welcome screen 45South (4769)
277477 2004-10-02 05:52:00 Ah, you didnt say XP Home originally, login is different to Pro, apparently you can't log on to the administrator account except in Safe Mode, as already stated
