277323 2004-10-01 08:07:00 I was installing a driver when power failed and the computer went dead.
The cat jumped on a pile of power plugs knocking them out.
When the computer boots up the following message is on the desktop.

RUNNLL
Error loading
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ShellE.xt\MSDServ.dll

I run scan disk but it didnt help.
Do I need to reinstall windows?
Every thing else is sweet
thanks for any help

277324 2004-10-01 08:28:00 Start in safe mode. Run - then in the box, type in sfc.

277326 2004-10-01 22:40:00 Thanks Peter for your reply.
Did as you say it found corrupted file, and it gives two options

1. Restore from cd not possible as safe mode there are no cd rom drives
2. Select ignore option do this it continues to scan rest of files then come with this message
This program has preformed an illegal operation and will be shut dow.
Go to details button it says SFC caused an invalid page fault in module KRNL 386.EXE etc
Is there a program I can install that ignores the warning on boot?
thanks Tedheath

277327 2004-10-02 00:53:00 Ted, run sfc in normal mode or boot with cdrom support. Be aware though, that sfc replaces files with the origonal versions of the windows CD so, any system updates or files that have been modified (dll's by installed programmes for eg) may need to be replaced, reinstalled and/or re-registered.

Do a search of the MS Knowlefge Base for the specific file + windows 98SE and see what that tells you. As suggested it may be a specific programme or drivers only that you need to uninstall then reinstall, first suspect would be the one you you were installing during the outage.
