277364 2004-10-01 08:00:00 Anyone on this and receiving 256/128 yet? barmypom (6048)
277365 2004-10-01 08:11:00 Ok - I figured it out. I had thought the upgrade was automatic today. Looks like it's just the signups that start today.
So I signed up and this is the message I get.

"Thank you - your upgrade order has been loaded into our system.

Please remember that due to customer demand, Telecom has indicated it may take anywhere from 7-30 days to complete the upgrade to UBS.

Orcon will notify you via email when Telecom provides us an estimated "upgrade date". Please do not call the helpdesk to check your order status until at least 10 days has elapsed. "

7-30 days!? Telecom are really making us wait!
Bummer. I was thinking I might get the faster speed this weekend. :(

277366 2004-10-01 09:05:00 Hi barmypom , I'm on an Orcon 256/128 plan and until the last few days I was as happy as ... last two days it's running as slow as a wet week - shell.net reports 125kbps , McAfee = 119kbps ... I've run a full set of tests over the 'puter and found no problems , so I've e-mailed them asking if they have any suggestions . If you want I'll post back when I get a reply . Mike KatiMike (242)
277367 2004-10-01 09:31:00 Have just recieved this reply ... apparently they're busy ...

Thankyou for emailing Orcon customer support.
Your email has been received and will be processed as quickly as possible, however we are experiencing some delays at present due to high customer demand so it may take up to 48 hours to get an initial response.

We've just implemented a new ticketing system to allow better tracking of customer enquiries and orders - and your email has been assigned the identifier: xxxxxxxxx. Please ensure you keep this ticket ID in the subject line of any related replies.

Warm regards,
Orcon Customer Support.

277368 2004-10-01 10:57:00 Is this the new Bitstream plan you are referring to, or the existing Jetstream Surf?

I can't quite figure out why the hell I've been told the new service is available but will take 7-30 days for Telecom to implement. I mean they are already providing 256/128 to Jetstream Surf customers, so what's the hold-up?
For a company making an awful lot of profit....blah blah blah...I'll refrain from making another Telecom rant cos I'm used to their sh*t by now and nothing surprises me anymore. Besides...it's Friday and the weekend's here.

Because UBS is a completely different product to JetStream and where as Telecom did all the throtling work with JetStart and the JetSurf plans the UBS is done at the ISP. Do a search and see how it works and you will get your answers.

Anyway Telecom have said the UBS is on hold at the present and instead are offering 2MB/192KB JetSurf plan from 24th October for the same price. Far better than the 256/128.

I will be going for that when it comes out and stick with Paradise as just an ISP.

Yes - but it's more expensive and is also capped. Ok 10Gb might be enough for some people but not for me. At 2MB/s I'd whizz through that far too easily. Also the upload speed is still crap - I want to be able to video conference on MSN and 192kb/s is still too slow to do that well enough.
I can't help feeling that these new plans are trying to keep people off the UBS as much as possible. And the delays to providing the UBS are only adding to the frustration.
I'm not going to give in to Telescum and sign up for their crappy plans.

My connection has been rubbish for past 6 weeks, latency and connection speed. I initially had Orcon look into it and they advised it was a Telecom problem, in so much as I am routed 'all over the place' and that is affecting my latency. Orcon's advise was to hold fire till UBS comes in and they would then be able to take control of the situation.

Telecom have physically been around and checked my connection and after about 2 weeks of to'ing and fro'ing came back to me on the phone yesterday and said my problem was that I am connecting thru the Christchurch RAN and should be thru the Porirua or Auckland RANs. They said they will put it in 'to be changed' when they next do a shuffle around - but couldn't give me a date.

Are you in Katikati? If so it may be a reason your conn is bad - I am in Tauranga.

The 2MB plans are attractive, and being offered by Orcon too from end of October, but I am not sure I want to go back to Telecom's routing system. I will see what difference it makes when UBS is active, and most likely stay wiith that ($20 a month cheaper) if the pings to gaming servers are better than I am getting now.

277372 2004-10-02 02:03:00 Many thanks for the informative reply Jester , yes I am in Katikati so may well be experiencing problems for the same reason[s] you are ... really Christchurch ??? I too shall await UBS and see if things improve , thanks once again :) KatiMike (242)
277373 2004-10-03 20:55:00 Well I have signed up for the bitstream and I too got the 7 to 30 days advice as well. My adls for this month with telecom comes up again on the 11th of this month, so if is NOT changed over to the bitstream before that date then i have NO intention of paying another moth of Jetstream to telecom, they can take a running jump for all I care.
