277276 2004-10-01 02:16:00 Hi. I've just done something really and truly terrible...

I just bought a copy of PC Authority :O

But only because it said on the cover "Free full Linux OS!" (Don't worry, I've also got the latest PC World for when I go to Australia)

The Linux distro is Lycoris version 1.4, and I intend on installing it. I've got a 40gb Hard drive, with C: 10GB (1.3GB free) and D: 30GB free (9.14GB free). I intend on resizing D: so Lycoris takes up 4GB, but the drive is NTFS. I would back it up, but I have no CD writer, and no ther hard drive. So does Lycoris have a non destructive NTFS partitioner (GUI of course)?

Thanks, MM :)

No.

You will need Partition Magic or similar. Some Linux Live-CD's can do non-destructive partition of NTFS.

Regardless of whether a partitioning tool can do non-destructive partitioning, there is a chance you will lose your data. The fact you cannot back up your data at all, suggests that this is not a good idea to try in the first place.

Perhaps save up for a small 2nd hand HDD and install that as a slave drive for Linux.

277281 2004-10-01 23:05:00 How did you find installing Lycoris?

Last time I tried it was over a year ago... Was good, clean install. Playing Solitare helped to pass the time (No other installer I know of offers solitare while you wait).

I'd be keen to get some feedback on it! I bought that mag a week ago myself ;-)

Chill.
