277262 2004-10-01 01:34:00 I'm putting together a new machine, and want it to be a good one. I will be doing a lot of gaming. I have been sticking with Intel processors and motherboards, but mostly from habit. What's a good motherboard/CPU combination ? Advice apreciated. Thanks WILLWILLWILLWILL (236)
277263 2004-10-01 01:36:00 It might be useful if you mentioned your budget Pete O'Neil (250)
277264 2004-10-01 02:45:00 it might be a good time to break that disgusting habit of yours then. :P.

personally AMD are better for gaming, and their are benchmarks to prove this.

Cheers.
Jams.

Are you looking for a flameware Jams? If he wants to buy Intel then let him buy Intel, the difference between an Athlon and P4 maybe be note worthy on paper but in the real world may only equate to a few FPS and isnt noticable.

277266 2004-10-01 03:38:00 dude . lol .

settle on the paranoia . im not looking to flame anyone .
AMD's are generally cheaper aswell . but that depends if your running on a tight budget .

LOL . but if you would like to start up a flame . im more than happy to .

"If he wants to buy Intel then let him buy Intel" .

this person is asking for help . and i am supplying him with some . and did you not see that word that says "PERSONALLY" . as in my own opinion . im not telling him what he has to do!

like i said . im not out to flame anyone .

277267 2004-10-01 04:55:00 As mentioned what is your budget? for gaming i.e. Doom 3 you will need some heavy graphics power and lots of RAM, so as a start look for a MB with 8x AGP ( or PCI express ) and that can take 2G or more of RAM.

SATA is nice, but it is a hassle with installing an OS so look for IDE for now.
RAID features may be useful if you need to swap lots of memory, but most new MB have it.

Also get a GOOD case with lots of ventilation and a 400W PSU, remember to check that the 400W is OUTPUT rating and not INPUT.

My 0.0001c worth.

All modern motherboards can handle 2gb+ of memory, at the moment for gaming 1gb seems to be the sweetspot. If money isnt an issue then 2gb is nice

As long as your not using a RAID array there are no problems installing an OS on a SATA drive, especially if its using an Intel motherboard. The new chipset for the Athlon64's make installing an OS to a SATA drive a breeze aswell.

Wattage isnt everything when buying a PSU, unless the PC has alot of extra drives etc most computers can get away with a quality 350w PSU. But once again if moneys not a problem then a quality 400w+ PSU is a good purchase.

Not always the case, some MB have problems with 2G+ of RAM and PCI memory mapping .

Gee, someone should tell win2k that it is easy to install on a SATA drive ;:

True a good 350W PSU will do, but that extra 1G of RAM and the other HDD etc . . .

277270 2004-10-01 05:34:00 Hmmmmm. Why not talk amongst yourselves?

I note that WillX4 has not come back and answered the most important question. My prize for the most important question has to go to Pete for asking about budget.

If there is not a budget then a Doominator will definitely work. I can't see one reason why it wouldn't anyway.

277271 2004-10-01 07:01:00 Hi WillWillWillWill,

As Pete has mentioned the budget is the critical factor, but the new AMD 939 chipset seems to give a reasonable price performance ratio :)

VIA KT800 Athlon 64 3500 1024MB RAM 2 x 80GB SATA RAID 0
Nx 6800GT 256MB nVidia 61 . 77 Drivers
High 1600x1200 4 x Anti 36 . 6fps
High 1600x1200 Anti Off 58 . 1fps
High 1280x1024 4 x Anti 48 . 1fps
High 1280x1024 Anti Off 67 . 5fps
High 1024x768 4 x Anti 62 . 6fps
High 1024x768 Anti Off 72 . 6fps
High 800x600 4 x Anti 70 . 7fps
High 800x600 Anti Off 72 . 8fps

I think these results show that this system is GPU limited at the lower resolutions, but becomes CPU limited at the higher ones .

HTH ;)
