277273 2004-10-02 03:27:00 Sorry it took so long to get back. Anyhow,... Money is not a concideration. I want to put together a state of the art system. The best. I have the case and power supply so far, and monitor. I was thinking of one of those new , what are they? ..64 bit systems, but a friend told me thats not necessary. Also I'm not an electrical engineer, so a motherboard with a lot of extras is... I got a SOYO Dragon SY-P4I865PE Plus dragon 2 for my sons machine, and I can't understand most of the options in the BIOS. I have an ATI 9800 Pro graphics card I bought a while ago and never used, and a few other parts still in boxs. I like the sound of the new 800 mhz FSB. But is a SATA HD a good idea? I want to get set up so my system isn't obsolete in a year. Give me a list of MB, CPU and memmory and I'll order them today. The advice I have gotten from you guys at F1 has been great. I only wish I could do something for you. WILLWILLWILLWILL (236)
277274 2004-10-02 04:51:00 If moneys not a consideration and you want intel then a P4 system based on the new 925X chipset is what you want. Something like the ASUS P5AD2 Premium with the new 3.6GHz LGA775 P4 and atleast a 1gb of DDR2.

What you need to consider with the above system is that its uses completely new technology. The 9800 wont be compatiable as this motherboard uses PCIe as apposed to AGP. Your old DDR wont be compatiable as this mobo uses DDR2. But what you must remember is that all these new technologies are the way of the future. Expect DDR2, LGA775 and PCIe to be around for a long time to come. What you must remember is that theres always new technology around the corner. New 1066MHz FSB P4's are expected soon (which wont be copatiable with the ASUS P5AD2) with a new chipset, chipsets supporting dual PEG slots are also expected.

You could also consider a Athlon64 system with a AthlonFX 53 an Abit AV8 and atleast 1gb of DDR1. The FX53 is slightly faster than the 3.6GHz P4 but wont be noticable in real world applications.

Dont buy a Soyo motherboard there are better brands out there. If you want something cheap get a Gigabyte motherboard, if you want to overclock get a DFI or Abit, if you want features buy a ASUS. If you want a super super stable P4 system get a Intel mobo.

Why not get a SATA drive? They have no disadvantages over PATA plus they also have smaller cables and are slightly faster. If i was buy a new HDD tomorrow it would be a SATA drive.

277275 2004-10-02 06:32:00 I would take that 9800pro off your hands as a trade/discount for any hardware item you may be after.... metla (154)
