| 277515 | 2004-10-02 09:46:00 | I've just done something very good and clean. I've installed Lycoris *me dances* Just 2 things 1. On the desktop (Uses KDE), I've changed my wallpaper to something with a white background. Unfortunetly this means I can't see the text under icons. Can someone advise me as to how to fox it? 2. (Slightly harder)I've got a problem. One word can describe it. Winmodem KPPP is asking nicely to connect, but the modem's gone to sleep. It's a Dynalink modem. Is there a website to fix this, or does anyone else have this budget kind of [internel] modem, and can provide a fix? Thanks, MM |

Can someone advise me as to how to fox it? Right click on the desktop and select "Configure Desktop", then "Background" and "Advanced Options". You can change your colours here etc. > 2. | 277519 | 2004-10-02 22:23:00 | Chill> Didn't want to work. I unziped it (In Linux), and it cameup with a file. I clicked it, and it didn't quite do anything. I told it to open in terminal, but that didn't want to work either :( But I've discovered the rest of the computer hates me for installing linux. The Camera (Canon Powershot A85) keeps not connecting (Yes it's plugged in, and works in Pictbridge and under windows), the printer/scanner (HP PSC 1315 all-in-one) dosen't want to be found (again, Pictbridge works perfectly, as does under windows) and the speakers (Genuis 2 speakers, on SoundMAX digital audio) don't want to work (They did the Windows XP login thing so they're working- under wind-woes). Are there any sites providing at least basic drivers for these things? If I need to download things, It's a winmodem, but Lycoris can read NTFS partitions, so all sweet there :). Thanks, your local Linux newbie :) |

I assume you put the package in your /home/megaman directory? In the terminal enter in:ls -alNote those are lowercase L's and not uppercase I's. You should see an entry like this: -rw-rw-r-- 1 megaman megaman 150664 Oct 3 12:05 scanModem This shows the permissions of the script and the fact it is not executable yet. To make it executable enter in this and note the case senstivity:chmod +x scanModemIf you run "ls -al" again, you will now see a -rwxrwxr-x indicating it can now be executed. Next run the script:./scanModemAfter it has run, a folder called "Modem" will of appeared, so look inside this for the results of the scan. |

| 277521 | 2004-10-03 02:08:00 | OK I've just run it. In modemdata.txt it says it's a "Conexant HCF 56k Data/Fax Modem" I thought it was a Dynalink. Can someone point me towards a link for drivers? Thanks, MM |

| 277522 | 2004-10-03 02:20:00 | It doesnt mean that it isnt a dynalink modem, it just means that it is using the Connexent HCF Chipset. | ilikelinux (1418) | ||
| 277523 | 2004-10-03 02:27:00 | www.linuxant.com is where you can download the drivers and try the rpm. |

The same goes for the multifunction printer/scanner. Sound - you say your speakers don't want to work. Is it the speakers or is it the soundcard isn't correctly configured not giving you sound? Open your favorite terminal als[tab][tab] [tab] refers to actually pressing the tab key. If the als is joined by the letter a (to make alsa!) then you have alsa installed and can continue - if not install the alsa packages off your cd, or grab the latest ones from http://www.alsa-project.org If/once alsa is installed: su alsaconf (and follow the onscreen instructions) pick your soundcard yes update modprobe exit alsamixer (set your volumes) Change programs (gaim, xmms, etc) to either use sound through Alsa or automatically. |
