277227 2004-09-30 22:21:00 Has anyone had slower startups since installing SP2, and does anyone have a solution for this. (I Have most unneeded services off, windows firewall off etc)

Thanks

277228 2004-09-30 22:51:00 Is it only starting up that is slow or general useage as well?

Was your upgrade to SP2 over a fresh install of Windows or an upgrade over an "old" Windows install?

Have you scanned for viruses, spyware, etc? The forum has a few FAQs on Maintenance, Spyware, etc that may be of some help .

I hope you have a third-party firewall running if the Windows one is off .

277229 2004-09-30 23:13:00 Bit of a delay at boot time here too. I did everything according to the instructions - clean up, virus scan etc etc down to defrag - before installing SP.2 which seems to have added about 30 seconds to boot time. Norton 2004 also added to boot time (when I installed it some time ago) and total boot time is now approx 2 min 30 secs. Is this way above "normal"?

277230 2004-09-30 23:23:00 I have a comp here thats taking its time to boot after sp2............about 2 hours to get to desktop, lmao, And when it gets there a message flashes up and says the system is in an unstable state and needs immediate care and attention.

Seems it had corrupted system files, as SP2 loaded on it flashed up multiple warnings and then finally locked up solid.

277232 2004-10-01 03:28:00 I have noticed the same but in reverse, ever since installing sp2 my shut down has slowed to a snails pace. Have scanned for gremlins but nothing shows up miknz (3731)
277233 2004-10-01 04:51:00 It is only startup times that are affected, it is over an "old" xp install with sp1, no viruses or spyware. NIS 2003 running. pleasehelp (882)
277234 2004-10-01 05:02:00 Doing a bit of a Google search on SP2 slow down shows that it occurs more frequently than it should .
I couldnt find anything definite to explain why or to provide a cure .

I didnt time my system before and after, but there is no noticeable difference in either startup or shutdown .

I would suggest a good registry cleaner ( I found hundreds of entries that were cleaned out subsequently), and also a registry compacter .

Also the usual suggestions to scandisk and defrag could be tried, though several of the comments I read on the different forums indicated no improvement .

I am beginning to get the impression not backed up by any proof, that if the original XP installation was all ok, clean and tidy, & no funny business, with no known hardware issues like the Prescot fix mentioned in the Experiences thread, then the SP2 install would generally be better .

Also Nortons AV and other programs do seem to cause more than their fair share of problems, not just with SP2 install either .

I have had little faith in Norton products since they introduced a so called crash guard program that seemed to cause crashes, and it was subsequently withdrawn .

One good program they have is Ghost, but they didnt originally write that, they bought it from a NZ company :)

This may or may not be valid, but....

277236 2004-10-01 06:27:00 I should have added, that like you I originally installed SP2 over XP Pro SP1 & it went fine for 2 days then turned to custard that's why I did a clean slipstreamed install (no probs with install at all)
I've had no program or driver issues (& I have a huge variety installed)
Been rock solid for 5 weeks now
