277981 2004-10-04 00:05:00 Hey all,
I have a gateway computer with DSL and networked off that I have another pc that shares the net connection. Both are running XP pro. I have set up Remote Desktop on the pc i want to see but I dont know how to set up the gateways firewall etc to allow access through to it. Any ideas?
Oh and i'm running SP2 with the built in firewall.

Cheers

277982 2004-10-04 00:16:00 So the net for BOTH is OK. So, all you're asking about is the remote desktop?

If BOTH have SP2, just goto control panel/windows firewall, (if XP's firewall is enabled on BOTH), and exceptions tab. Click it for Remote desktop. That should fix remote desktop. And the one you want to get access to, give it a user name/password.

277983 2004-10-04 00:25:00 Ok but doing this will run remote desktop on my gateway pc - not my main pc wouldn't it? cat007 (6231)
277984 2004-10-04 01:01:00 What exactly are you trying to do? Let one PC access the other thru remote desktop?? Whats the point in doing this, if the 2 PC's are in the same place? Are they in the same house?

Just enable remote desktop on the one u want the other PC to access.

BUT you'll have to give it a username/password (login user/password).

If BOTH PC's have SP2 installed, just do as previously said. Remote desktop would be a LOT slower if these 2 are in the same house. (just like if u were to access remotely somewhere over the net).

It'll be better just to network them.

277985 2004-10-04 10:17:00 If you are trying to remote desktop your other PC from within your own network then all you have to do is turn on remote desktop on the PC you want to control. The XP SP2 firewall will automatically allow this action to happen so no input required from you. The other computer requires nothing done. Now all this assumes you have a network that works and as other posters have stated you require a password on the controlled PC. If you require access via the internet then repost with this request if this is what you require? Berryb (654)
