277821 2004-10-03 03:53:00 Those who have read dibbly's thread on the lost user account with administrative rights will be wondering what can be done to prevent that happening.

Well, I dont know how to prevent dibbly's mishap , but this is one way to have another administrative account with the same profile as your main account with administrative rights, so if your system turns to custard you can logon as another user and your desktop and profile will be identicle.

Appologies to those who know all about XP user accounts and permissions/rights etc, I'm just feeling my way :)

First create another user account with administrative rights in the User Account applet from Control Panel.

Then log off your current admin account and log onto the new account.

Go to Control Panel-System-Advanced-User Profiles-Settings, highlight your 'old' admin account and click on Copy To. Note if you highlight your new account the Copy To button is greyed out.

Then select a folder on another partition to copy the profile to.

Log off from your new account and re-log on to your admin account.

Then go to where you stored the backed up profile, select all the files, and copy them to the new account folder located at C:\Documents and Settings\new account.

You will be prompted to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Now you will be able to logon to the new account name and it will have all the same settings as your current main admin account.

I hope that is fairly clear, I'm still struggling with a thick head cold, so everything is fuzzy:), but it does work.

This is aimed at those who use default accounts that have admin rights.

You could do this on a regular basis to have a reasonably uptodate profile backup.

277822 2004-10-03 04:11:00 Thanks Terry, that may come in handy someday (though I hope I don't ever need it!). :-)

Hope you can shake off your cold soon, it sounds like you have had it a little while now. :-(
