277704 2004-10-02 20:35:00 My Dad in his 80s has a 2 year old basic HP running XP, he installed SP2 last week. In Internet Oulook before installing SP2, in an email with an attachment he could double click on the attachment and it would come up in its own window. Now when he clicks he gets this message

:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Fil...
Attachments
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel.
OK

He tried opening attachments previous to installing sp2 that had opened no problem and the same message came up.

I have checked this site, Microsoft and Google but cannot find any help with how he would create a file program association, any ideas would be much appreciated.

277705 2004-10-02 20:57:00 Not quite sure without seeing it what you are looking at but am slightly suspicious of the line ":\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Fil..."
Why is it looking in Temp internet files for the attachment?
Seems strange.
I would save the attachment to desktop or My Docs then turn on Details by going View>details & find out what extension tha attachment has.
You may find he has uninstalled the program associated with the file or he has changed the associations by accident.
Post back with the extention eg.
.zip, .jpg, .xls etc & someone will help you to recreate the file association.

Is the email from a trusted source as that 1st line bothers me.
Be careful it's not trying to run a script of some sort

277706 2004-10-02 21:15:00 Thanks 45South, I should have mentioned that the attachment is a a jpg that I sent him (my emails are scanned by McAfee when being sent), it appears at the bottom of the email, but he cannot click it to open in a seperate window and print it off from that (HP must love him as he prints almost every image he is sent to show his friends and goes through the ink cartridges in very short order). He was able to open these before his sp2 installation. We live on 46 degrees south and he is in Blenheim so I am just going on the information he is telling me. Heather J (815)
277707 2004-10-02 21:31:00 Save the file to desktop or my docs, right click once & select properties from the popup menu
Another popup appears, select the change button then double click the line that says"Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" or the approriate graphics program if he has one that he normally uses, then apply & OK.
The only problem is, if the associations have gone for jpegs then chances are other files will also have problems.

He can also go to Tools > Folder options > File Types and re-create associations from there but if he's anything like my father (also in Blenheim & about the same age) the simpler the better.

277708 2004-10-02 21:36:00 get him to check his settings by going to
MyComputer>View>Folder Options>File Types
Scroll down to the entry 'JPEG'. Click it and you will see what program has been 'associated with' it. You can change it right there but it might be easier to go to this site and read the easy way to do it:
How to Open a File with Other Than Associated Program

277709 2004-10-02 21:55:00 The usual procedure to set up an application association is:

Go Start | Settings | Control Panel | Folder Options | File Types. In the Registered File Types box, scroll down under Extensions until you find jpg. Highlight it. Click on Change. Scroll down in the subsequent box until you find Windows Picture and Fax viewer. Click on it to highlight it, and OK your way out.

(You may not have a Change button - in which case there's a slightly different procedure. If you can't find Windows Picture and Fax viewer, then it will need to be reinstalled. If either of these is the case, post back for more instructions)

277710 2004-10-02 22:19:00 Thanks Johnboy and Greg S, I will phone him tonight (he has a busier life than me at his retirement village and is never at home during the day!!) and go through the steps you suggested and will post what was the results. I do appreciate the time you have taken to reply to me thanks again. Heather J (815)
277711 2004-10-04 20:50:00 We followed your suggestions and found that jepg was already associated with MS Pictures and Fax. Then tried Tools/ Options/ Security tab unchecked "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" - but again the same result - "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel" when he tried to open the jpg image. After installing sp2 3 weeks ago he found that Nortons was not running Auto Protect, so I found instructions on the Norton website to manually configure Windows Firewall to run with Norton AntiVirus. "To configure Windows Firewall Start > Control Panel. Double-click Windows Firewall. Click Exceptions tab Click Add Program. Click LiveUpdate-Norton AntiVirus" and yes the Auto Protect came on. Would it be feasible to go through the same Windows Firewall process to Add Outlook Express as the Firewall may be blocking opening the attachments, I would hate to do something dramatic to his computer when he is at the other end of the Island. Thanks Heather J (815)

I kinda doubt that would fix the issue, and not too sure if it would be a good thing, because Outlook Express is one of Windows' major security holes.

Having said that, it's worth a try because the process is completely and safely reversable.

If it really comes down to the issue being with Outlook Express, then there are always other email programs he could use.

277713 2004-10-04 21:11:00 Is it with only that one email/pitcure or with every email with a pitcure. If the later he has a problem.
Can he open any other jpg's in My Pitcures?
