| 277693 | 2004-10-02 19:47:00 | firefox-0.9.3-i686-linux-gtk2+ xft-installer.tar.tar - shouldn't this be firefox...installer.tar.gz given that mozilla release firefox as gzip'd tarballs? Unless you've already unzipped the gzip archive in which case it should just be firefox...installer.tar To sort this out: Open your favorite terminal (xterm, gnome-terminal, konsole, etc) cd /[path to firefox]/ tar -xzvf firefox-0.93-i686-linux-gtk2+xft-installer.tar.gz If anything works here then you know that it was a gzip'd archive (.tar.gz) and was just renamed. From there you just move the firefox directory to wherever you want to (some people keep it in their home directory, others move it to other parts of the system). If you got an error (this isn't a gzip archive or something along the lines of that) then try using: tar -xvf firefox-0.93-i686-linux-gtk2+xft-installer.tar.tar If you want to create a symlink for firefox so you can run firefox just by entering "firefox" into a terminal, shortcut link, etc: su (this is still in the terminal) cd /usr/bin ln -s /[path to firefox]/[firefox dir]/firefox exit Also grab the latest version - 0.10.1 came out within the past week: www.mozilla.org |

| 277694 | 2004-10-02 20:30:00 | I would agree with Wood-Chuck, only dont get the installer.... Download Firefox (non-installer), open a terminal and type: su - [enter root pw] mv /home/username/firefox* /opt cd /opt tar xvzf firefox-1.0.0-pre1-i386-linux-gtk2.tar.gz ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox exit All done :-) What you've just done is: Become Root move the firefox compressed setup to /opt extracted the files linked to the main executable so from the command-line you can now type: firefox And it'll work :-) Chill. |

| 277695 | 2004-10-02 21:39:00 | > I would agree with Wood-Chuck, only dont get the > installer.... What is the reason for not using the installer version? I have used both (in fact just updated to 1.0.0 using the non-installer version), and there doesn't seem to be much difference to the installation process. > Download Firefox (non-installer) They hide the non-installer package on the Firefox download page, you can get it from this link (ftp.mozilla.org). > linked to the main executable so from the command-line you can now type: > firefox You can also make yourself a desktop shortcut by right-clicking on the desktop > Create New > File > Link to Application. Under the General Tab, replace the words "link to application" with "Firefox". Click on the Icon symbol to the left which will open up the Select Icon dialog box. Then select "Other Icons" and Browse to where ever you put the Firefox directory eg. under /home or /opt and look under /firefox/icons and select the moxicon50.xpm. Next go to the Application Tab and under "Command" enter in firefox. Click OK. That is it. :) That command "firefox" is assuming you made the softlink "ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox" like Chill suggested. If you didn't, you would need to click the Browse button next to the command field and browse to where the firefox folder was saved and select the firefox executable within in it (/firefox/firefox). Please post back if you need more help or get stuck. :) |

| 277697 | 2004-10-03 03:40:00 | Well, you can. They could also go in /usr/share, but I find that keeping them in /opt means I keep better track of the apps Ive manually installed so that when it comes time to update them, I know exactly where it is.... Chill. |
