278177 2004-10-04 08:19:00 hey i got hold of a Cisco 2514 router and had a look at the dismal amount of ram inside.

i had a look at the ram chip istelf and found that it had a 72pin edo ram device.

does anyone know if you can use standard Ram inside a cisco router or is it Cisci proprietry Ram?

278179 2004-10-04 21:20:00 Seriously, from what I can see, these routers need to use Cisco approved ram.

But if the main memory in yours is 8MB then I dont think you would cause any harm by trying a 16MB stick of EDO, and see what happens.

The flash rom is a different matter, but as I say there is quite a bit of info about ram upgrades using Google.

278180 2004-10-04 22:14:00 According to this (www.certification-forum.com _EDO_RAM_for_this_found_in_old_486_Pentium1_based_ systems_96557.html) Fast Page ram is needed, EDO will not work. Terry Porritt (14)
278181 2004-10-05 01:29:00 You've got to remember that Cisco routers (1) don't run Windows, and (2)mostly don't use Intel processors. :D So they can work quite well without huge amounts of memory. Graham L (2)
278182 2004-10-05 02:50:00 darn... about the RAM, the router only has about 8 megs total and upgrading would be overkill for me.

ah well what does one expect for 20 bucks

278183 2004-10-05 03:14:00 I wouldn't mind one of those... got any sources I should know about? :p Growly (6)
278184 2004-10-05 05:57:00 not really.

i got it when The Ark Comp recyclers were having one of those clearance sales.

I dont think they knew the value of it so sold it cheap to get rid of it.

Well as they say..
