278090 2004-10-04 06:27:00 err... hello :)

today when i started my computer and tried to connect to the internet, i found that my username and dial number had been changed, the dial number to something beginning with '002'. SO i fiddled around, and changed the number back to the original (username as well) but it could not connect...

then i had the inspiration to restore a registry which was backed up about 3 weeks before this, and everything returned to normal, and i could connect. Can you smart people please tell me if everything is back to normal again, and i am still not dialing that 002 number, and how did this happen, and what is it?

thanks in advance,
SeNTiNeL

278091 2004-10-04 06:32:00 Sounds like some kind of dialler, that has installed on your system

I would get Spybot from http://www.spybot.info

Download, install, run, and scan your system

278092 2004-10-04 06:35:00 It is quite likely that your computer has contracted some nasties so I would suggest that you follow the suggestions in the forum's Spyware FAQ to clean it out.

The link to the FAQs is top right of this page - go to FAQ #16. You will need to scroll down to the second to last post in that thread as the FAQ has had a few revisions.

It sounds like you have a dialler, diallers are usually porn diallers, obtained as a result of visiting porn sites or illegal software sites (in most cases).

1st step - stop going to those kind of sites.

2nd step - SpyBot/AdAware, and probably delete all you connectoids and make them anew.

3rd step - if you must view that kind of material either pay for it at a reputable site or use an alternative browser.

I note you said, "in most cases."
This helps as in my opinion it is not in ALL cases.

So how do you do that with all pop up ads that advertise all sorts of stuff and if you click for an antivirus then you can get a phone dialler installed just like that.

Possibly that may help.

So I assume you have a "reputable" porn site for which you pay and this won't be added to your phone bill?

Say anything you like "outright".

Just don't accuse people before you know the facts.

Sorry for speaking on your behalf.

Spybot, Adaware, Antivirus, Trojan detectors and firewalls need to be installed.

Then we can worry about different browsers, spam, operating systems and whether our wife, brother, sister, cousin, aunt, mistress, dog, cat, friend, uncle and etc have access to the computer or not as the case may be.

Common sense is a start.

Well gee who'dve thought, that could be why I put it theree - thanks for repeating it though.

Doesn't warrant answering

There are next to no innocent parties as far as diallers are concerned. All the stories about "but no one goes to sites like that" "never in my life have I seen..." are just that. Stories.

I have spent a significant portion of my working day getting people with dialler problems sorted out. I am yet to see a single one where there was no porn site in the history, or warez in the favourites, or images in the cache - innocent browsing doesn't cause problems it's an extreme extreme extreme rarity.
