278299 2004-10-05 02:40:00 The existing Jetstream connects as well as it can at the DSLAM and then depending on plan gets crippled further into the network. Apparently the new JS regime will be limited at the DSLAM. ADSL can be thought of as modems working in parallel. Presumably the limit will be on how many. So long as the line speed is sufficiently higher than the plan speed to account for overheads there shouldn't be a problem. PaulD (232)
278300 2004-10-05 08:28:00 Ahhh PaulD ... so this chap has a line speed of 450k downstream , so if his connection is fed 4-8 M in he gets 450k ... if he's fed 256k he'll get 256k less possibly a bit of loss due to the physical line factors involved ... learning all the time , interesting post KatiMike (242)
278301 2004-10-05 10:05:00 I know someone closely who was on a full speed plan but due to the distance from his exchange was only getting around 600Kb/s download. This was acceptable to him at the time. He's since moved to Jetsurf and hardly notices the page load differences while surfing/email etc. He's noticed a small increase in his favourite online gaming pings, but feels that the increased bandwidth allocation and less worry about over-going his allocation makes it worth it. I agree with him. Greg S (201)
278302 2004-10-05 20:02:00 i would say he would be fine with the 256k. At work we only connect at about 380K for a full speed connection, when i questioned telecom about the speed they just said "so what" its the copper wires in your area and its not cost effective for us to replace them so youll just have to take it or leave it.

Doesnt leave you with much choice really does it. So now the jetstream 256K venture plans are here and our ISP says that we will experience the full 256K speed which isnt that much lower with about 3x the data cap and all for less money.

From what i have read about dsl is that if you are further than the 5km away from the exchange then you will experience lower speeds but if you can get 450K already you wont experience lower speeds otherwise you would of heard of a lot of people complaining that their 256K plans are not 256K connect. I havent heard of this happening.

With regards to his business plan vs home plan, it shouldnt be an issue, he should be able to change over via a phone call to his isp in a billing period, and it would be much to his advantage.

278303 2004-10-05 20:18:00 Thanks guys.

That confirms my suspicions as well, that he should get all or most of the 256k speed. I have communicated this to him.

He can change plans, and knows all those issues. Its just that the Telecom help desk told him the speed will be too low to be useable.

278304 2004-10-05 20:19:00 tell him to switch to ihug satellite i believe thats VERY fast and available virtually everywhere drcspy (146)

It appears you are not familiar with the Ihug Ultra satellite service.

Ihug satellite service is fast download, but he would be back to using his dial-up for all uploads and while connected.

It would tie up his phone line, requiring a second line to allow his business to function, and limit his upload speed to 33.6kbs.

That would be a backwards step, agreed?

This person wouldn't happen to live in Howick would he? I recommended this exact thing to a customer of mine just the other day

278307 2004-10-05 20:40:00 oh no i'm perfectly aware of that just assumed that he was more interested in fast downloads most people seem to be these days. drcspy (146)
