278441 2004-10-05 08:05:00 I have my drive split into 3, all Win XP NTFS partitions.

I am want to delete the first one and the third one, and expand number 2 to the whole drive.

I used knoppix 2.6 and qtparted. I deleted the first partition, but found i could not extend partition 2 to the left, so I rebooted.

The boot thing and whatnot must have been on the first partition, becuase then it would not boot.

Went back to knoppix, set partition 2 as an Active Partition or something in qtparted, then restarted.

It said NTDLR or something was missing, press cntrl-alt-del to restart (this was at boot up time). So i installed XP back onto partition 1 (created new part. in the blank space, then installed, all using xp cd)

So back to the start.

Now I am asking you guys, how do i do it? (Delete part.1 and part.3, keep part.2 and make it fill whole drive)

Thanks

Without something like Partition Magic or a similar program, you can't. Chill may be able to recommend something Linux that can do it - I know he has mentioned that sort of thing here in the past but I have forgotten what it was.

Why does it have to be Partition 2 that needs to be saved? Have you got all your programs, data, etc on it? If so, can you not save the data and start from the beginning by wiping out all three and then creating one new partition from scratch then formatting it and installing Windows?

278443 2004-10-05 09:53:00 there's another thread currently dealing with similar issues (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) KatiMike (242)
278444 2004-10-05 18:52:00 There is a program on part. 2 that the guy from the company has to come and install, which would cost a bit. mejobloggs (264)
278445 2004-10-05 20:23:00 get norton ghost you can get it for a mere $35 or so on trade me as part of a norton system works package......use it to create an image onto cd of the partition you want to save....then wipe all partitions on the drive using whatever you like, (fdisk perhaps ?) then recreate the system as one partition and re-ghost the image back to it........ drcspy (146)
278446 2004-10-05 20:55:00 Partition 1 will be the primary partition, and partition 2 & 3 will logical drives within the extended partition.
You can't remove the primary partition and use only extended partitions.

278447 2004-10-06 02:49:00 It is not a good thing to have one partition.
Your primary active partition has the OS on it & should be kept reasonably small so it is easy to make a back-up Image of it. 6gigs is ample.
Your second partition can be for backups & software & 3rd for Data.
Do not put your Data on drive 'C' in "my documents" otherwise if the system crashes your data goes with it.
If you get an error on a small partition it is easy to deal with. If you have one partition a single error can sut you down.
You should use 'Partition magic' to partition the drive. You can also use Dos F'Disk, but be carefull, it is very powerfull.

I think I will go with this. Thanks for that. Is any version ok? Or should I just be going for the latest or something?

278449 2004-10-06 03:52:00 well I've got system works 2003 and that version of ghost is very good to use.........you can get the latest if you wish but it'll cost more.......a very quick look found me this: www.trademe.co.nz ........its systemworks 2002 which I *think* will be fine for your purposes......have you used ghost before / drcspy (146)
278450 2004-10-06 03:54:00 if you have info on two partitions and you make separate images of each partition you can then wipe the drive and repartition to whatever sizes you want and then rewrite the images to those partitions.......just make sure you put the boot drive on the primary partition of course and that the partitions are big enough to hold the stuff youv'e imaged......ghost will also allow you to compress the image file when you are makeing the image so that it'll fit on fewer cd's it'll fit about 1Gb on a cd........just have a look at the options menu when you run it...... drcspy (146)
