278158 2004-10-04 09:33:00 My floppy drive makes the system hang in normal mode but works normally in safe mode. Why would it do that?

278159 2004-10-04 09:45:00 have you patched your system lately (sp2) has it always done this or just a recent development and do you get any error messages if so post them here beama (111)
278160 2004-10-04 09:58:00 Yes it's sp2. I did a clean install including wiping the hard drive first. It did it for most of the last windows install too. phil.b (4456)

278163 2004-10-05 08:24:00 MB=Asus P4S8X-X, P4 2.4, 768 Ram, MSI Gforce MX460 Video Card, Trios2, 5 Hard Drives, PCI Raid card set for ide. I just wanted a drive to back up to from 3 operating systems. Soundblaster card, TV card, Dialup modem, DSE ADSL router.

I made the system up myself, it worked with no problems until 1 day the floppy threw a hissy. I was wondering if a windows update could have caused it. The reason being, I wiped the hard drive before doing a clean windows install, upgraded it to sp2 & did all updates before installing any software, used Norton windoctor & Regscrub XP, defragged it. So in theory it should be ok. The floppy is the only device connected to the channel, no conflicts. I'll have a look at the Asus site for an update.

278164 2004-10-05 08:39:00 Forgot to say, it works perfectly in linux phil.b (4456)
278165 2004-10-05 09:41:00 did you test the floppy drive BEFORE installing SP2 beama (111)
278166 2004-10-06 08:27:00 I looked on another forum I came across in the internet . If your floppy light comes on & stays on, flip the ide cable . If the light goes out it's the power or a faulty ide cable .
I flipped the cable & all's well . I don't know why it worked for ages & then suddenly stopped . It may be a windows update made the cable direction critical .

Thanks for the help Beama
