But also remember that PATA harddrives are in the majority of PC out there. Granted quite a few geeks are using SATA but what about all the old crappy HP's and Compaqs out there? It would be a stupid move by harddrive manufactuers to stop making harddrives with the most common interface. PATA harddrive will be avaliable for a long time to come.

For example think back to the good ole days of ISA, its only in the last couple of years that it became impossible to buy motherboards with atleast one ISA slot. Technologies dont just disapear overnight and i'll bet my front two teeth PATA wont disappear over night either.

Intell most deffinatly MicroScam are behind the push to make this happen NOW!

To generate needed sales, to get stockholders off their backs

To force this you need to remove the 40 pin connector from the board or drop 40 pin hd support from IDE 1-2.

It will be many years before a majority of manufacturers will jump on that band wagon.

End 2005 unless something magic pops up processors will be out to 2 years plus to double their speeds (currently 18 months).

There is going to be a needed change of pace. mabye we will get some real advances in technology instead of gimic technology for the sake of sales at any cost.

If the read Write numbers on memory sticks/cards can be seriously improved.

Moving storage platter drives will all be under viability question.

Sata is a good toy for the soho must haves, Business is still mostly SCSI many commercial desk tops are still under 1g 128.

The P/o's in these places will not pay for sata full stop.

278593 2004-10-06 09:35:00 I consider S-ata a last grasp from outdated tech and doomed to be obsilite before it ever becomes the standard,we are waiting for the next big thing as far as storage goes, and SATA doesnt deliver on any aspect.

Bring on the terabite flashdrives.......

278595 2004-10-06 10:10:00 SATA isn't going anywhere in a hurry
It does outperform PATA & with the interface due to jump to 300MB/s next year that's when we'll see a significant speed hit

278596 2004-10-06 10:16:00 Can't see it,chances are the speed increase wont increase speed at all,the speed the drives read at is all ready slower then the transfer speed, increasing the transfer speed acomplishes nothing by itself,ATA-100 is faster then current drives read.

The major problem with current harddrives is relability, they need to be replaced with new tech, not old tech that runs faster with no real world benifit.

278597 2004-10-06 18:31:00 Well like it or not I'm still betting that within twelve months all new comps . will come with a Sata hard drive . Have you noticed that all new m/b's now have Sata fittings and the price is more or less the same as Pata? It's new . so we are going to get it .
As a point of interest I have just installed a new Sata disk in my comp . The first one lasted 9 months before dieing . The new one is also a Seagate Barracuda and it is the quietest HDD I have ever heard . The first one was quite noisy right from the start . My comp . now has the same noise level as a refrigerator .

278598 2004-10-06 19:08:00 Don't get too rough when moving SATA cables, the existing SATA1 design sockets have a reputation for breaking off the MB or drive. PaulD (232)

Oh yah lets just make the interface faster, but leave the disks running at the same crappy speed they've been running at for ever. Theres no point increasing the speed of the interface if the drives themselve arent capable of ultilizing the extra bandwidth. Assuming that because the drive has a faster inferface will make it run faster is naive.

Thats generally what happens with new technology, doesnt mean that the old technology will stop to exist. At some point you have to start adopting the new technology so that people can change over from the old. It doesnt matter if all new comps come with SATA or not, there will alway be more old computers in use than there are new computers being brought. PATA is here to stay for a long while yet.
