279165 2004-10-08 04:01:00 We recently defragged our XP Home C drive. Wouldn't do it at first, 'Insufficient free space' message. 6oGB drive partitioned C & F approx half each. We had to get rid of some stuff to give us the 15% free space it asked for, then Defrag worked ok

So here is the question..... Went into the Dell W98se to also Defrag. Again 'Insufficient free space' message. This HD is only 16GB, so if 15GB is reqd to defrag, it will not be possible to free up 15%, if this is what it takes. Am I doing something wrong?? There is over 10GB free space available at the moment. PJ

279166 2004-10-08 04:14:00 have you tried using the disk clean up feature(not sure if you have it) and let it see what you can remove, maybe there is heaps in the TEMP folder. not too sure....... Prescott (11)
279167 2004-10-08 04:23:00 Prescott.... Did all that first, as always. Actually about weekly as a matter of course. Thanks PJ Poppa John (284)
279168 2004-10-08 06:03:00 meh, it was worth a try....... :8} Prescott (11)
279169 2004-10-08 06:40:00 15% of 16 GB is about 2.4 GB.
Not sure where you get the 15 GB from? (pre dinner wine perhaps?)

You were doing the defrag in safe mode I assume?

279170 2004-10-08 07:28:00 gf.... Yeah well!!!. Was meant to read as intelligent.
Not in safe mode, no. Why? No apps running other than the hidden ones.
Ok I tried this myself. Error message was "Not enough free memory" Which is a different kettle of fish I think. So What Now??? PJ

279171 2004-10-08 07:32:00 Try Defragging is safe mode & see if you get the same messege stu120404 (268)
279172 2004-10-08 07:35:00 Further..... System properties says 160MB ram installed. Actual is 1 X 128 & 1 X 64 MB ram = 192. ? Is 160MB ram not enough for Defragging with. Processor is Dell 400HZ (?). Max motherboard is 450. PJ Poppa John (284)
279173 2004-10-08 07:40:00 More further!..... How to safe mode on the Dell W98se Please? PJ :8} Poppa John (284)
279174 2004-10-08 08:47:00 Safe mode is the same for every version of Windows.

Tap F8 twice per second as the computer boots into Windows. Should catch it OK.

Now, have you ever defragged the 98 PC?

This problem can happen when the hard drive is larger than 8GB and has a cluster size smaller than 8 KB. Thats to do with the way it was originally setup if this is the case, and without losing all the data and reformatting not much you can do.

If you have previously defragged, then it must be something else.

As to why use safe mode, look at it this way:

If you were changing the oil in the car, would you let someone drive it to the shop without warning while you were doing it? Safe mode stops everything unknown from disk access, and saves on "accidents" happening while data is shuffled around on the drive.
