279129 2004-10-08 02:48:00 ...yes, I know slowing down a Jetstream connection may seem contradictory, but that's what I want to do.
I recently went from Jetstarter to full speed 500mb per month, but I (and 3 teenage children) chew through that in about 8 days, so the first month's bill was horrendous. Now I know I can up my allowance ( and go from exorbitant to extortionate), or drop back to Jetstart (Jetsurf now?) speed, but what I really want to be able to do is to artificially slow the speed down at whim. So when I'm on it's fast, and when the kids are surfing it's a crawl. I imagine that it's technically very simple to do, even if it's just a matter of introducing artificial delays periodically.
Does anybody know of a bit of software, or some sort of tweak I can do, that will achieve this?

Ian.

279130 2004-10-08 03:10:00 Hi Ian,

You might want to have a look at JetSurf:
1gb per month at 256k download speed, $39.95 for telecom customers (per month)
3gb per month at 256k download speed. $49.95 for telecom customers (per month)

In terms of what you're trying to do, I think there's a program called "Netlimiter" or something along those lines, but I've never used it myself.

279131 2004-10-08 03:28:00 One option would be to get an old PC box and install IPCop on it.
Put this between your ADSL router and your network.
It has an option of setting max download and upload speed and is just a matter of ticking or unticking a box to turn it on or off.

Of cause this is getting a bit techo but it's more fun!

Maybe will do the job??

279133 2004-10-08 03:50:00 So all you want to do is limit the speed of your connection.,

I don't know if you're aware but all that will do is increase the time it takes for things to download. You won't use less of your data limit if you slow the connection.

It may be a better idea to getter a bigger data limit.

On a personal note, I would say that 500MB/month for 4 people is wishful thinking to say the least.

279134 2004-10-08 04:33:00 My thanks for the quick & good responses. I've spotted 2 good possibilities...

"I think there's a program called "Netlimiter" or something along those lines, but I've never used it myself."
I looked and it seems very good for a stand-alone comuter, so...

"...get an old PC box and install IPCop on it." looks like an even better way to go.

"...all that will do is increase the time it takes for things to download...". Yes, I agree. I thought a bit of psychology might do the trick though - "I won't bother if it's going to take an hour instead of 35 seconds...".
And I agree in hindsight that 4 people + 500mb = wishful thinking.
