| 279176 | 2004-10-11 05:46:00 | Can you please confirm if you have successfully defragged the system - ever - since the HDD was last reformatted? As per my last post above? To repeat: This problem can happen when the hard drive is larger than 8GB and has a cluster size smaller than 8 KB . Thats to do with the way it was originally setup if this is the case, and without losing all the data and reformatting not much you can do . If this has just "suddenly" become a problem, we need to look further . If its possibly always been the case, then you cannot fix it without losing all the data and reformatting, setting the cluster size when its being set up again . |

| 279177 | 2004-10-11 06:28:00 | GF..... We do not remember EVER doing a defrag since we bought the Dell 2nd hand & having w98se installed, about 18months ago. I suspect we have tried but didn't persevere. At that time we replaced its existing HDD for the 20/16GB HDD in it now, this was re formatted at the time. PJ |

| 279178 | 2004-10-11 08:29:00 | In that case forget about defragging unless you want to do a complete reformat and reinstall, and start from scratch. Setting up the HDD parameters differently. If it's not broken, don't fix it I guess. |
