279175 2004-10-11 05:20:00 Problem still the same, will not defrag in safe mode either. Also tried scandisk & got the same error message "not enough memory". What now folks. PJ Poppa John (284)
279176 2004-10-11 05:46:00 Can you please confirm if you have successfully defragged the system - ever - since the HDD was last reformatted?

As per my last post above?

To repeat:

This problem can happen when the hard drive is larger than 8GB and has a cluster size smaller than 8 KB .

Thats to do with the way it was originally setup if this is the case, and without losing all the data and reformatting not much you can do .

If this has just "suddenly" become a problem, we need to look further .

If its possibly always been the case, then you cannot fix it without losing all the data and reformatting, setting the cluster size when its being set up again .

279177 2004-10-11 06:28:00 GF..... We do not remember EVER doing a defrag since we bought the Dell 2nd hand & having w98se installed, about 18months ago. I suspect we have tried but didn't persevere. At that time we replaced its existing HDD for the 20/16GB HDD in it now, this was re formatted at the time.

279178 2004-10-11 08:29:00 In that case forget about defragging unless you want to do a complete reformat and reinstall, and start from scratch. Setting up the HDD parameters differently.

If it's not broken, don't fix it I guess.
