279150 2004-10-08 04:24:00 Pheonix,

I have turned off all firewalls, made exceptions, allowed computers with certain ips (192.168.0.2) to access the computer.

There is still no ping.

How can I test the network cables? I have a feeling that the network cable is faulty. Don't want to buy another to test it. Could take advantage of DSE's 14 day money back guarantee soley to test the cable...

279151 2004-10-08 04:35:00 Seeing as pinging is not working, it would be a fair assumption that your network is not working. If you dont want to buy another to test the cable then its probably easist just to return it. If you brought it sealed from DSE then its probably not the cable at fault. Are you sure the cable is a crossover? DSE crossover cables have red plugs. Are both network cards installed properly? Pete O'Neil (250)
279152 2004-10-08 04:42:00 Pete,

I've had the cable for a while. And yes the cable is crossover from DSE with red plugs.

The windows device manager tells me the network card is working properly on both computers. I also have lights blipping on both cards, so that shows they are active right.

279153 2004-10-08 09:51:00 Try pinging each computers ip address from itself.
eg the computer with ip address of 192.168.0.1 ping 192.168.0.1 and the computer with ip address of 192.168.0.2 ping 192.168.0.2
This is good indication that the network cards are working ok.
If either fails then ping 127.0.0.1 wich test if there is an internal connection to the network card.

279154 2004-10-09 01:16:00 Davesdad,

I have pinged each computers own Ip, and they are responding with 100% success. When I ping the other computer, I get 100% fail rate and a timeout message

I got another cable to try, but there is still no connection.

Are there any other suggestions.

Whats wrong with having a gateway?

279155 2004-10-09 01:38:00 What network protcols do you have installed on each PC? Pete O'Neil (250)
279156 2004-10-09 01:53:00 Host Computer: Windows XP Pro
Client for Microsoft Windows, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Client Computer: Windows 98SE
Client for Microsoft Windows, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, Dial up adapter (adapter), ne2000 compatible (adapter), tcp/ip -> dial up adapter (protocol), tcp/ip -> ne2000 compatible (protocol).

And I am not sure if this is of signifcance, but sometimes on the 98se computer, network neighbourhood will show the 98 computer and a network with only one computer. The XP computer shows nothing on the network places, not even it's own computer.

279157 2004-10-09 02:19:00 Uninstalled QoS Packet Scheduler, it wont be affecting your network but its not really required so you may aswell get rid of it. You may need to install the IPX and NetBEUI protocols on the 98 machine for it to work happily with the XP machine.

If the XP pc isnt showing itself in its own workgroup then that would suggest that the XP system is the problem. Do you have another NIC you could test in that system? It sounds as if the 98 machine is doing exactly what it should be. Open up a DOS prompt and type "ipconfig" does everything look in order?

It might be a idea to do a google for windows XP networking guides and go through and make sure youve set everything up correctly on the XP machine.

279158 2004-10-09 02:21:00 So u have filled out the info thats needed on 98se under Control Panel/ Network card(TCP/IP), thats where u enter the internet gateway which is 192.168.0.1 (on XP)?? And enabled ICS thru XP's dialup?

You can uninstall QOS on XP (thru the dialup). This isnt needed.

279159 2004-10-09 02:39:00 Hey Guys,

I've had a breakthrough, but there is still a bit to go.

I can see both computers on the network now on the XP computer and the 98se computer. The computers are networked now. We can share files etc.

What I did was change a network card on the 98 computer. Simple.

But, there is still no internet connection. Im getting there.

ICS is enabled on the xp (client computer).

Will continue to play around.
