279095 2004-10-08 20:09:00 You could try reinstalling Opera and see if it asks to be your default browser. If that does not work you could uninstall and then reinstall. tommy (2826)
279096 2004-10-08 21:00:00 Thanks again 'mark c' tried what you suggested - no luck. Then I tried your suggestion 'tommy' reinstalled Opera, clicked 'YES' as it asked if I wanted to make Opera my default browser. Still, whenever I click a link on my desktop or on the quick-launch-bar it alwaysopens in IE6. However, I haven't tried to completely uninstall and reinstall Opera yet - am a bit hesitant as I have already spent a lot of time entering bookmarks of my important links into Opera, -
I'll see how it goes might try the uninstall trick later.
Cheers, both have a good weekend.

with some programs (and links) they will always open in IE due to the OS (or prog) sending the link to IE. the links on the desktop i assume where saved while in IE, try saving new links in opera.

279098 2004-10-08 22:43:00 Thanks 'tweak'e', tried that - dragged the link from Opera's address bar to the desktop - no luck it still opens in IE6. The only way the links open in Opera is, when I save them in Opera's Bookmarks section. There is one more thing you might know the answer to. When I open a webpage in Opera it creates a tab, then when I open another webpage the first tab gets overwritten by the second tab. Is there a way to to make all the tabs visible without having to click on the 'New Page' button each time? As you might have guessed I am new to Opera.
Cheers

279099 2004-10-09 00:00:00 if i get what you mean.....

when you click on a link it opens in that tab. if you want it to open in seperate tab you can right click "open in new page" or my personal favorite use the middle button on the mouse which is assigned to "open in background page".

279100 2004-10-09 01:46:00 Thanks tweak'e, your post has been very helpful, didn't know about the 'Open in Background' feature. Must say I really like Opera much better than IE6. Thanks again.
Have a good weekend,
Cheers

My preference is to use the Ctrl+Shift keys when clicking on links to open them in background tabs. You can navigate between tabs using the Keypad #1 and #2 keys.

The two following pages may be of some help with your default browser problem:
my.opera.com
my.opera.com

279102 2004-10-09 03:29:00 Interestingly enough, my problem is that sites I need to open in IE (banks, government departments) and have saved as icons to my desktop, insist on using Opera! Never bothered to figure it out, so I just open IE when I need it.

John is our expert on Opera. He'll have an answer.

279103 2004-10-09 03:33:00 And to keep tabs visible across the screen, go to Tools - Preferences - Windows - tick "open new page next to active" - Apply - Ok Done. Winston001 (3612)
279104 2004-10-09 08:59:00 Thanks a million Winston001, you have certainly solved my overwriting tab problem, that's exactly what I wanted, a new tab just by clicking on a link. At first it didn't work then I realised that I had to untick 'Reuse existing page' Thanks again.
Thanks to you too Tommy for the two links, have just about given up on my Opera default problem, can manage quite well as it is now, just avoid clicking on links on the desktop, have put all my important links into Opera's Bookmark section. So when I start surfing I just click on the Opera link in the Quick Launch Bar and go from there.
Cheers
