279140 2004-10-07 23:34:00 Hi Fellow F1ers,

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 connected to the internet (woosh using usb). I have a network card and a network cable (crossover) connecting to another computer (win98se).

Im trying to follow the instructions from www.practicallynetworked.com but I am stuck because I have no internet gateway in my network connections folder.

I want both computers to be able to access the internet. I do not have a hub.

279141 2004-10-07 23:49:00 Why don't you use the XP network setup wizard? That will set up Internet connection shareing for you.
Or in TCP/IP properties on the 98 machine set the Gateway as 192.168.0.1 and in the XP machine set the IP address of the network adaptor as 192.168.0.1. These addresses must be used for ICS to work.

279142 2004-10-08 00:18:00 XP's network wizard isn't the best thing to use. It doesnt always work. And 98se / 98 isnt the easiest os to try and network to either!

The wizard usually stuffs things up totally. It's better if u do the ips manually.

279143 2004-10-08 00:23:00 Hi,

Internet Wizard is not working and never did. I tried to set the gateway using the settings you gave me 192.168.0.1 on both computers, but the 98se cannot connect to the net.

279144 2004-10-08 00:39:00 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 is for the pc that has ICS ONLY . (XP) Not 98se if its the networked PC . DON'T try and use 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 on BOTH . They'll be an ip conflict .

If u have dialup, go to the dialup/properties/advanced, (on XP), and tick allow other users to use this internet connection .

Thats the only option u have to tick under advanced . On XP under the LAN icon, under Internet Protocol/TCP/IP, double click on this and select select an ip manually (if you've ticked allow other users to use this connection, this should have 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 already) . Under this put 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 for subnet mask .

Leave the rest blank under TCP/IP, on XP . On the 98se PC, go to control panel, click on the network card/TCP/IP . This is where u configure 98 so it gets on the net . That first URL SHOULD explain how to configure the 98 PC .

279145 2004-10-08 00:52:00 Spacemannz,

I have done everything you recommended. I am now thinking that maybe the computers are not connected at all. There may be a faulty cable etc.

How can I check this? There is nothing in "my network places". Should there be something there like the other computer?

279146 2004-10-08 01:24:00 Umm, on both is file sharing enabled?? Thru the LAN icons/properties??

Have u made a new folder on both?? That u want to share?? DON'T share the whole hard drive tho .

Just a folder, on each . You won't see anything in Network Neighbour/My Network Places, if a folder isnt shared . Also are BOTH workgroups for BOTH the same??

279147 2004-10-08 01:54:00 Get a cheap router it would make this soooooo much easier . But if thats not an option then its probably a good idea to get the network up and running first .

First of all to make things simple lets give both PC's static IP's . The most common IP range is 192 . 168 . 0 . XXX . Give the XP system an IP of 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 and the 98 system an IP of 192 . 168 . 0 . 2 . Make sure both systems are on the same subnet, easist to use 255 . 255 . 255 . 0, also ensure that you have windows file and printer sharing turn on both PC's .

Now jump on the XP box and open up a DOS prompt and type in "ping 192 . 168 . 0 . 2" hopefully it should spit out a whole lot of crap about replies and how long they took in ms . You may need to install a couple of other network protocols for the 98 system to share files with the XP system . Now try pinging the XP system from the 98 system, type "ping 192 . 168 . 0 . 1" in a DOS prompt on the 98 system . If the ping's are successful then atleast youve got a working network .

Now the Woosh internet connection should show up in your network neighbourhood on the XP machine, listed above your network connections as an internet connection . You should be able to right click on this icon and select ICS to share the internet connection . ICS will turn the XP system a DCHP server which can cause a few problems down the line with the 98 system as 98's a ***** to network . Jump on the 98 machine and go back to where you specified the IP and tell it to automatically assign and IP, you may need to set the IP of the DCHP server before the 98 will recognise it . Restart the 98 machine, open up a DOS prompt again and type "ipconfig" hopefully your machine should still have an IP of 192 . 168 . 0 . 2, and the host should come up as 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 .

279148 2004-10-08 03:47:00 Hi Pete,

I tried everything you recommended up to the part when you ask me to ping both computers. Ping is giving me a timeout message on both machines. I have checked the IPs of beth machines, and I still can not get a successful ping.

I have changed network cards, and I get the same result.

Are there any diagnosis software I could use to pinpoint the problem?

279149 2004-10-08 04:02:00 If there are any firewalls on any of the PC's, disable them and try the "ping" again. Note that XP has an inbuilt firewall in case there is no icon in the tray to remind you. Pheonix (280)
