1371586 2014-03-30 03:59:00 Some years ago I took some movie 'scenes' on a Sony Handycam. I've recently transferred those files onto my computer hard drive, and now I'm attempting to compile the scenes into some sort of coherent movie. I've downloaded WMM on my Win 8.1 Acer laptop, and playing the "scenes" in WMM, I get sound but no picture. My research suggests I need a suitable codec.

My questions are:
a) Where should I go for a suitable (free) codec on the web?
b) How do I actually use the codec/s?
c) Does anyone have any other helpful suggestions, comments, or recommendations, please?

1371587 2014-03-30 04:37:00 I would have a look in the store. There maybe a program there, that'll let you watch whatever format the video is in

You have to be careful with codecs, some install malware

Most codecs you install them, it installs wherever then you use the program. Hopefully it uses it

Or you could try freemake video converter (www.freemake.com). Make sure you do a custom install / untick the 3rd party software when you install it. It MAY load it, it's a basic editor. And you can also convert whatever video to another format

1371588 2014-04-03 23:48:00 I think you are better off using Sony's Picture Motion Browser which would have been bundled with your camcorder, to compile your clips and finally export to a standard format. tmrafi (5179)

Most Sony Handycam record MTS file format, which is a high-definition MPEG, AVC, H.264 transport stream video file format.

WMM won't edit mpeg files, so you will need to use Sony Movie Maker which is pretty limited in its functionality but will hopefully do what you want.

1371590 2014-04-05 23:01:00 Thanks for those replies - much appreciated .

Using the original software on the supplied discs is what my old boss used to call a BFO (blinding flash of the obvious!) - thank you for that . And thank you all for the truly constructive comments .

I still have the 3 discs that accompanied the camera - in pristine condition! - so I'll re-start the project during the next week or so .

I clung to the notion that I needed to edit the takes singly, introduce fades and so on and then join it all together, take by take . And I see now that the order of those tasks is actually more flexible, and doesn't complicate matters . I'd also formed the idea that I should use truly modern software (the latest WMM), also wrong!

Bit hard to edit footage with it though

1371594 2014-04-09 10:29:00 I found the original disc supplied with the camera. When I ran it, it required a camera model code before you can begin. Guess what - you guessed it: my camera model isn't amongst the list of choices(even though the disc came with the camera as purchased!), so I couldn't get past square one!

Does anyone have any more (simple/cheap) suggestions for turning my mpg files into a simple movie that I can play on my computer?

1371595 2014-04-09 10:32:00 Maybe this? http://www.lwks.com/

As for the Sony softawre - did you try just choosing a different camera number? If all it requires is a code to install, who cares which code you give it?
