1354175 2013-09-24 04:24:00 I have a very silly question.

If someone says "you are selfless to a fault" what does that mean?

cheers

1354176 2013-09-24 04:32:00 You're nice.

Meaning selfless - opposite of selfish...to an extreme...meaning probably too nice for your own good, likely to be taken advantage of.

1354177 2013-09-24 05:04:00 That expression is praise - anything "to a fault" - extremely, more than is really necessary, in modern idiom it would be "110%".
The reference to "a fault" is that if you were any more so you would be over the top. e.g. "generous to a fault" - you're giving away so much that you're on the verge of bankruptcy!
But it's only an expression, just as "You're an angel" is an expression.

1354180 2013-09-24 10:42:00 It means you were probably not talking your mother-in-law. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1354181 2013-09-24 20:51:00 I find it funny that there are so many unpaired opposites.

You can be disgruntled, unruly, unwieldy, dishevelled and unkempt, but rarely is someone gruntled, ruly, wieldy, hevelled and kempt.
